"In recent weeks, Russian forces have advanced through the rubble of Marinka, a city in the Donetsk region. Russia now appears to control most of this area. However, Ukrainian forces still control territories on the western edge of the city," a UK Ministry of Defence report stated on December 5th.
British intelligence believes that one of Russia's main objectives is to further expand its control over the remaining areas of Donetsk. The resumption of operations targeting Marinka is part of Russia's autumn offensive aimed at achieving that goal.
Marinka is located southwest of Donetsk and about 30km southwest of the Avdiivka hotspot. Since 2014, the city has been on the front lines and has become a stronghold of the Ukrainian armed forces. The Russian army has been attacking Marinka since launching its special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
Before the conflict, the city had a population of about 9,000, but now it has been almost completely destroyed.
Last month, bloggers reported that Russia controlled about 95% of Marinka, while Ukraine retained only a small portion on its western edge.
