(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - The Prime Minister has just issued a telegram requesting ministries, branches and localities to deploy measures to prevent and handle food poisoning, emphasizing that recently, many food poisoning cases from bread have caused hundreds of people to be hospitalized. The most recent food poisoning case occurred on April 30, 2024 in Long Khanh City ( Dong Nai ). As of May 4, 518 people had to go to the emergency room due to eating bread, many of whom are in critical condition.
Bread is a popular food in our country. The price is reasonable, convenient for both children and adults every morning. For the bread seller, it is also very simple. Just need a cart containing bread and food to make the bread and can go around the streets to sell to customers. The authorities also have many difficulties in managing these mobile bread carts.
Gaps in food safety management have led to many food poisoning cases from bread occurring continuously in recent times. Most recently, in March 2024, in Son Ha district, there was also a food poisoning case from bread that caused 23 people to be hospitalized. When inspecting this bread shop, the authorities discovered that the shop owner did not have a business registration license or a food safety and hygiene certificate. The shop owner was fined 90 million VND.
Not only mobile bread carts have food poisoning incidents, but even branded shops such as Phuong bread in Hoi An city ( Quang Nam ) have also had food poisoning incidents in September 2023, causing 250 people to be hospitalized. Most of the bread poisoning cases were tested by authorities, including pork sausage, pork, lettuce, cucumber, onion, meatballs... all of which tested positive for salmonella. This is a type of bacteria that causes diseases in the digestive tract of humans and animals, called salmonellosis. The sample in the bread poisoning incident in Son Ha district was also concluded to be infected with salmonella.
In 2023, there were 125 food poisoning cases nationwide, causing 2,100 people to be sick and 28 people to die, an increase compared to the previous year. Bread is a popular food but also has the potential risk of poisoning. Therefore, heavy fines like the one in Son Ha are only a temporary solution, the most important thing is still the awareness of bread sellers in ensuring safety when selling to customers.
