"I love my father, who toiled tirelessly through rain and sun."
"A father's love for his children, enduring hardships for so many years."
- Excerpt from the poem "Loving Father" by Ngoc Anh -
A short story and a message from my father:
"My child,
Dad can't remember the last time we hugged. It seems like when you were little, he used to carry you on his shoulders, running around the yard as you giggled with joy after catching a kite that flew high in the sky. Then you grew older, and he gradually faded into the background – silently like a shadow. Not because he wanted to distance himself, but because he was afraid... of bothering you.
My father wasn't as good at sweet-talking as my mother. He didn't know how to comfort me when I was sad. All he knew was to work tirelessly from early morning until late at night, hoping I would have enough books, food, and clothing like my friends.
The day I got into university, Dad was so happy he couldn't sleep. You don't know this, but he secretly pawned his wedding ring to pay for my tuition. He said "someone paid off an old debt," and I believed him – because I'd never heard him complain about being poor.
Dad will always remember the shirt you bought him the first year he received his scholarship. You smiled brightly and said:
– I bought this as a gift for you, Dad. You can wear it to the parent-teacher meeting later to look cool!
Father was deeply moved. It had been a long time since anyone had given him a gift. He carefully kept the shirt in the closet, occasionally opening it to look at it before folding it back up. It wasn't that he didn't dare wear it. But... he wanted to keep it forever, just as it was the first day you gave it to him, still smelling of the wrapping paper and the look in your eyes then – proud and radiant.
Now that my child has a job in a big city, they occasionally call home and say:
– Dad, remember to take care of your health and eat properly.
Dad always says yes, yes. But his meals are very simple – he's content knowing his child is well out there is all he needs.
Many people say that fathers "sacrifice their whole lives for their children," but in truth, fathers don't feel deprived at all. Because seeing their children grow up day by day, becoming kind and decent people – that is the greatest joy in a father's life.
