Cham Ethnic Culture Festival - Imprint and Spreading Influence

With a series of vibrant cultural, artistic, and sporting activities, the 6th Cham Ethnic Culture Festival in Khanh Hoa concluded with a closing ceremony on the evening of June 28th. This significant cultural event contributed to honoring the cultural values ​​of the Cham ethnic group, fostering solidarity within the Cham community, and spreading the image of a Vietnam rich in cultural identity to friends both domestically and internationally. A vibrant display of Cham culture: In recent days, the wards of Dong Hai, Phan Rang, Bao An, etc., have been bustling with activities of the 6th Cham Ethnic Culture Festival. Cham people from provinces and cities such as An Giang, Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Lam Dong gathered together in this sun-drenched land. Everywhere the song "The Cham People's Joyful Festival" resounds with its heartfelt lyrics, full of affection: "Come here for the joyful festival with the resounding drums and gongs, my friends. We Cham people from all corners, from plains and mountains to the sea, gather together. We sing of unity, we sing of our homeland. Islam, Brahmanism, Bani, Hroi, one family..." Passing by the April 16th Square in Dong Hai ward - where the main activities of the festival take place - one can easily spot the traditional costumes of the Cham Brahman, Cham Muslims, Cham Hroi, Cham Muslims, and Cham Bani... blending together, creating a colorful cultural tapestry.

Along with the spectacular art programs of the opening and closing nights, the festival also featured many lively activities: art performances, reenactments of traditional rituals, cultural space displays, photo exhibitions, introductions to community tourism destinations, and sports competitions with folk games such as stick pushing, tug-of-war, and water carrying… Mr. Arisa Mach (Tan Phu commune, Tay Ninh province) shared: "This is the third time I have participated in the Cham Ethnic Culture Festival. Compared to previous years, this festival is organized on a larger scale with more activities. Localities have all prepared meticulously for the art performances and cultural display spaces. A new feature this year is the addition of a competition to introduce community tourism."

Attending the festival, many people from Khanh Hoa were delighted to see performances of traditional musical instruments and traditional folk dances by Cham girls. The lively sounds of the ghinang and paranung drums, along with the melodious saranai horns, seemed to invite everyone to join the festivities. “Living in an area with a large Cham population, I am familiar with the traditional cultures of the Cham Brahman and Cham Muslim Bani people, but I didn't know much about the cultures of the Cham Muslim Islam and Cham Hroi people. At the festival, I was very excited to see the dances of the Cham Hroi people from Dak Lak, and the traditional costumes and wedding ceremonies of the Cham Muslim Islam people from An Giang …,” shared Ms. Nguyen Bich Ngan (Dong Hai ward).

Spreading values

The songs, dances, and music of the Cham people, along with the exhibition space, fully showcased the diversity and richness of Cham culture. Many tourists came to visit and explore the beauty of the Cham ethnic community's culture throughout Vietnam. Among the crowds, Kevin Dinh, a Vietnamese expatriate from Singapore, enthusiastically watched each performance by the traditional performing arts groups, recording clips to share on social media. He was particularly delighted with the performance of the double drum, triple gong, and five-gong ensemble by the Cham Hroi group from Dak Lak. At the Cham cultural exhibition area in Khanh Hoa province, he lingered for quite a while to photograph artisan Truong Thi Gach making pottery and artisan Dang Thi Thang weaving brocade. "I really enjoy learning about traditional cultures, especially the cultures of ethnic minorities. Before, I thought the Cham people only lived in An Giang, but coming here I realized how numerous and diverse the Cham people are in Vietnam. Each community has its own unique cultural characteristics. This time, I will dedicate time to exploring more Cham culture in Khanh Hoa," Kevin shared.

"There's so much to learn and discover, from images and information about the temples to traditional crafts and music. I really enjoyed watching the graceful Cham girls perform their dances to the traditional music…," Dave Paulson expressed.

Visiting Khanh Hoa during the Cham Ethnic Culture Festival, Mr. Pham Van Vuong (a tourist from Quang Ngai) spent a lot of time exploring, experiencing, and immersing himself in the festival's atmosphere. He played drums with the Cham ethnic group's performing arts troupe from Dak Lak province and danced with fans alongside Cham girls from Khanh Hoa. "The Cham Ethnic Culture Festival is a very meaningful activity, not only contributing to the preservation of Cham ethnic cultural values, but also fostering unity within the Cham community in particular and among ethnic groups in Vietnam in general. This program also contributes to promoting Vietnam and attracting tourists," Mr. Vuong expressed.
After the closing ceremony, the artists and performers from the participating groups lingered, exchanging heartfelt words. Many young people exchanged phone numbers to stay in touch, promising to meet again at the next festival. The festival ended, but the memories linger on, and the solidarity of the Cham community remains strong over time.
