Actor Glen Powell as Ben Richards.
Set in a future world that has fallen apart in terms of humanity, the film reflects the dark reality where powerful figures, typified by the Network Corporation, exploit the poor while simultaneously organizing survival reality TV shows to attract viewers. Ben Richards (Glen Powell), an unemployed man, accepts a role in the brutal "Running Man" in the hope of winning the prize money to treat his critically ill daughter. Each participant has 30 days to not only escape hunters and ruthless assassins sent by the show, but also to avoid the watchful eyes of the entire nation. Having worked various jobs, Richards possesses the skills to face the challenges of the game and become the last survivor. But as he progresses towards the end, he realizes that the entire show is orchestrated by the producers, along with terrifying secrets...
The film's content is adapted from Stephen King's famous novel "The Running Man." Compared to the original 1987 version, the 2025 version adheres more closely to the original, features more advanced special effects, and incorporates current events of the modern world such as the use of AI to fabricate news and commit fraud.
The film, though over two hours long, captivates viewers, keeping them on the edge of their seats as they follow Richards' brutal survival journey. The pace quickens as the film progresses, with continuous chases and pursuits across various settings and terrains. The protagonist repeatedly escapes death through his own abilities and the help of strangers who share a similar plight: all victims of exploitation and oppression by the Network corporation. One character, in particular, emphasizes that Richards is the "trigger" to ignite a struggle, a resistance against the lies and oppression of the ruling class. Therefore, Richards also becomes a symbol, a hero. His spirit of resistance and that of the people in the film's dark world, along with its satirical critique of the hidden aspects and dark sides of society and reality television programs, becomes even more prominent.
Beyond the stunning visuals and technical camera angles, the film's soundtrack contributes to heightening the viewer's emotions with every step Richards takes, every drop of sweat, and every angry, desperate glance throughout the story. Glen Powell's portrayal of Ben Richards is incredibly convincing. Following the success of "Twisters," "Escape from Death" is seen as the next springboard for the actor to showcase his talent. He is also considered "Tom Cruise's successor" as he performs all the dangerous stunts himself. The supporting actors, especially the villains, are also convincingly portrayed with many unexpected plot twists.
Although the ending is somewhat ambiguous, "Escape from Death" is a worthwhile watch for those who enjoy adventure and action films. A sequel is possible, as Richards is a character with great potential for a new generation of survival films.
