Thinking ahead to election day

HNN - As I type these lines, in just over a week, the whole country will enter the National Day - the election day for the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term.

Campaigning for the March 15, 2026 election.

Along with exercising their rights and fulfilling their civic duties, voters nationwide also place their trust in the outstanding individuals who will be selected to serve in the country's and localities' power organs; hoping that they will make worthy contributions to a breakthrough term, leading Vietnam steadily into a new era, an era of national progress.

Looking back on the past period, we clearly see the crucial role of elected bodies in policy-making and unlocking development resources. Entering the 2026-2031 term, this role becomes even more important given the many fundamental changes and shifts in the domestic and international context. This is a pivotal period for realizing the goal of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the nation, a goal that General Secretary To Lam , on behalf of the Party and State, promised the people on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (1945-2025): “Our Party sets the goal that by 2045, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the nation, Vietnam will be a strong, prosperous, and happy country. That is the aspiration of the entire nation, a solemn oath before history and the people.”

To fulfill that promise, voters expect and have the right to demand that each representative not only be "dedicated" but also "capable." "Dedicated" here refers to a sense of responsibility to the Party, the people, and voters nationwide; "capable" refers to competence, qualifications, intellect, and the ability to handle assigned tasks and responsibilities in the most effective and high-quality way. Therefore, during voter outreach and election campaigns, besides listening to the candidate's biography, voters are particularly interested in that candidate's action plan. Voters in this new era do not want to hear vague, empty promises; they are interested in concrete commitments and specific actions linked to local realities and national issues. Based on this "data," voters will use their ballots to choose the most outstanding and deserving members to elect to the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels.

Of course, the election is not the end of the story. Every elected representative needs to remember that the voters of the 21st century, of an era aspiring to elevate the country to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other nations around the world, are a very different generation. They are a generation of voters with high levels of education, skills, and political awareness. Therefore, their trust is not only expressed through their ballots but will also be nurtured through monitoring the performance of the representatives they have elected.

The oversight mechanism of voters and the people in this new term is "predicted" to be stronger than ever, especially with the support of digital technology. Representatives will be closely monitored by voters and the public to see if they fulfill their campaign promises and with what mindset. They will see if representatives are deeply involved with the grassroots to listen, understand, and accurately reflect the thoughts and aspirations of voters and the people in their constituencies. They will also see if representatives fulfill their responsibility to set a good example, maintain ethical conduct and lifestyles worthy of the trust of the voters and the people they represent.

The country is facing a historic transformation towards its 100th anniversary. At that milestone, "Vietnam must be a strong, prosperous, and happy nation," as General Secretary To Lam solemnly promised the nation on behalf of the Party and State during the 80th anniversary of the nation's founding. To achieve this noble promise, those bearing the title of "people's representatives" must not stand outside the flow of the times – a flow that leaves no room for stagnation, indifference, or irresponsibility. On the contrary, each "people's representative" of the new term must perform their duties well, ensuring that the elected apparatus operates smoothly and efficiently, contributing to the country's achievement of the national development goal by 2045.

With such deep faith and hope, voters are eagerly awaiting March 15th to cast their ballots and elect the most outstanding individuals to the National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels. Sunday, March 15th, 2026, must certainly be a great day of joy, a celebration for the entire nation!
