Love in Thai village

In Thai village (Ea Kiet commune), whenever someone in the village passes away, people voluntarily contribute labor and money to take care of the funeral. This is a beautiful cultural feature, nurturing the affection of the village in the midst of modern life.

Buon Thai, Ea Kiet commune was established in 1995, initially with only a few dozen Thai households migrating from Nghe An province to live. People not only built a life on the new land but also preserved many good traditional customs, including supporting each other in funeral arrangements whenever someone in the village passed away. This custom originated from the spirit of sharing and village affection.

Thai villagers came to pray for health for the family of the deceased.

Mr. Luong Van Thai was moved when he recalled his mother’s passing last November: “When my mother passed away, relatives came to encourage her, some contributed money, some contributed labor to help with many tasks. Thanks to that, we were able to take care of her funeral properly. Our family will never forget that kindness.”

In the midst of modern life, it is these acts of kindness that have created the unique identity of the village, where each person always feels the protection of the community.
Vice Chairman of Ea Kiet Commune People's Committee Nguyen Van Minh.

According to Mr. Vong Van Dong, Secretary of the Thai village Party Cell, since the establishment of Thai village, people have voluntarily mobilized each other to contribute money and labor to support bereaved families, regardless of rich or poor. From this basis, the village self-management committee coordinated with the Front Committee and branches and organizations to effectively implement it, and at the same time included it in the village's village covenant for long-term and regular implementation.

A meeting of the Thai village Party branch discussed preserving the cultural identity of ethnic groups.

Initially, each household only contributed 5,000 VND for each funeral. Over time, as the cost of organizing the funeral increased, the contribution amount was adjusted to suit the economic conditions of the people: from 30,000 VND, then 50,000 VND and by 2019 increased to 100,000 VND/funeral. Those who had the means contributed more... All adjustments were discussed openly and democratically in the people's meeting and received high consensus. The collection and disbursement were clearly documented, fully recording the total number of participating households, the total amount collected and the specific expenses.

Not only providing material support, after the burial is completed, the next day, villagers will come to pray for the health of the deceased's family. Some contribute money, some contribute labor to help the family organize a thank-you meal. "Every time, there are many villagers present, some helping, some encouraging. It is this spirit of solidarity that has helped the disadvantaged families to be more steadfast in times of trouble, preserving the traditional values that have been cherished by the Thai people for generations," Mr. Dong expressed.
