Although entering the AVC Nations Cup 2025 with a lot of skepticism, in the end, Quoc Duy is one of the two main scorers of the Vietnamese men's volleyball team.
Brilliant performance
In the context of his favorite student at Border Defense Club, Pham Van Hiep, being injured, Coach Tran Dinh Tien has placed his trust in Nguyen Van Quoc Duy for the opposite setter position in the Vietnam national team.
Standing at 1.85m tall, the 2001-born athlete is physically inferior to Van Hiep (1.91m) or Pham Quoc Du (1.95m). But in the end, Quoc Duy was the player who made waves at the AVC Nations Cup. According to statistics by the end of the tournament, he had scored 83 points and was the third best scorer of the tournament after Chang Yu Sheng of Chinese Taipei (104 points) and Nguyen Ngoc Thuan (93 points).
Left-handed, Quoc Duy shows that he is extremely dangerous in attacks on the second side. His smashes, whether cross-court or line-up, always have a lot of force and stun the opponent's defense. His strength in attack helps Quoc Duy make up for his physique, which is not too tall for a male volleyball player. Not only attacking at the net, Quoc Duy is also very dangerous with attacks behind the 3-meter line and serving. Of the 83 points he has, Quoc Duy has 73 attack points, 6 direct serve points and 4 block points.
His ability to score points in a variety of ways makes him feel like he has a point every time he gets into a swing. Quoc Duy brings real fear to his opponents, whether they are Korean, Indonesian players or even the reigning champion Qatar. However, his weakness lies in defense when he cannot block the ball effectively due to his height limitation.
However, with his brilliant performance, Quoc Duy was almost kept on the field by coach Tran Dinh Tien until almost the end of the match. It was not until the final matches of the Vietnam team at the AVC Nations Cup, when his physical strength was significantly worn out, that Quoc Duy had to give way to Pham Quoc Du.
But disappeared in the water
Despite his brilliance in the national team, Quoc Duy is paradoxically not used in domestic tournaments. Until now, he is still on the payroll of Tra Vinh - a team that regularly plays in the National A League.
Thanks to his talent, Quoc Duy is often given the opportunity by his club to play for teams in the National Championship. Previously, he played for Trang An Ninh Binh and then The Cong Tan Cang. In these teams, the boy from Tra Vinh left a strong impression.
In early 2025, Quoc Duy was brought back by the new recruit of Ho Chi Minh City Police. But things were no longer smooth when he could not compete with his senior Pham Quoc Du - who was more suitable for the team's playing style.
And so Quoc Duy completely "disappeared" in the first phase of the 2025 National Championship. It was so sad that many fans even forgot which team he was playing for. In the Hung Vuong Cup, the fact that the Ho Chi Minh City Police team used 3 foreign players, Michal Kubiak, Julio Cardenas, Rendy Tamamilang, made Quoc Duy's chances of playing even more rare.
Faced with this unhappy situation, Quoc Duy decided to say goodbye to the 2025 National Championship and return to Tra Vinh to compete in the A-League. In a lower-level tournament without foreign players, a star like Quoc Duy was too outstanding. Thanks to that, his team won all 4 matches of the first phase.
It is unclear which team the 2001-born setter will play for in phase 2. If he continues to sit on the bench at Ho Chi Minh City Police or returns to play for Tra Vinh, the question of Quoc Duy's professional development will be raised. And it could cause his talent to be wasted in a regrettable way.
