Free swimming lessons at Long Xuyen swimming pool attract a large number of children, a practical activity that helps improve physical fitness and prevent drowning.
After a year of hard work, summer is a precious time for students to rest, develop physically and mentally, and form essential skills. Instead of waiting for the general curriculum, parents in Long Xuyen City are planning their summer vacation according to their family circumstances and individual educational goals. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh (a teacher at a secondary school in Long Xuyen City) chooses to take her children back to their maternal grandparents' home for the entire three months of summer. Ms. Linh shared: “Going back to the countryside is an opportunity for the children to be close to their grandparents, play childhood games, tend the garden, and swim in the river. These things are not available in the city.” For Ms. Linh, summer vacation doesn't need to be overly elaborate; simply allowing children to freely explore their familiar living environment is very valuable.
In Binh Khanh ward, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang also brought his child back to his hometown, but combined it with a plan for learning and training in Long Xuyen City. “At the beginning of summer, the child visits his grandparents to relax. Afterwards, he returns to the city to participate in swimming, football, cycling… which is both healthy and helps him learn life skills. The family also encourages him to study independently and help with household chores.” Many parents also choose modern classes to help their children access technology and develop critical thinking. The Information Technology Center of An Giang University organizes many classes, such as: basic programming, graphic design, office computer skills… for primary and secondary school students.
In addition to the formal education system, some amusement parks in the city cleverly integrate learning and creativity into their games. At the Bé và Bạn (Baby and Friend) amusement park (Coopmart Long Xuyên supermarket), since the end of May, they have implemented a robotics model for children from 6 years old. Children are guided in assembling robots that can move using batteries. Ms. Pham Thi My Tien (Manager of the Bé và Bạn Skill Development and Play Company Limited branch) said: “This activity helps children develop patience, flexibility, and limit their screen time. Each child participates in turns, with specific guidance tailored to their age.”
For parents concerned about safety and life skills, the free swimming classes at Long Xuyen swimming pool are a top choice. Organized by the Long Xuyen City Center for Culture, Sports and Broadcasting, these classes are for children aged 6-12 from poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged families. Each class lasts 12 sessions, with professional instructors and close supervision from lifeguards. Mr. Truong Minh Tu (lifeguard) shared: “Children will learn basic swimming skills to prevent drowning. Only after mastering the techniques will they be allowed to swim in the deeper water area.”
Currently, the center is in the process of being transferred to the commune level as part of the merger plan, so no other summer activities besides swimming classes are being organized. However, the organizing team is still trying to maintain the classes throughout the 3 summer months to ensure children have a safe and practical place to practice.
From the perspective of someone experiencing it firsthand, Danh Dang Khoa (a 4th grade student at Le Loi Primary School, My Binh Ward) shared: “I like going out to play and running around with my friends. I like computer science because it’s fun, but if I had the choice, I’d still choose to play. I also like reading comic books and detective stories.” Khoa’s preferences reflect the common mindset of many primary school students: Summer is a time for freedom and exploration beyond textbooks.
From a directional perspective, Plan 341/KH-BCĐ.SHH, issued by the Steering Committee for Summer Activities (Provincial People's Committee), shows that in 2025, the locality will still implement many activities: children's summer camps, swimming popularization, life skills competitions, cultural exchange activities, etc. However, parents are increasingly tending to personalize their children's holidays, flexibly combining rest, learning, and skill development according to their family's circumstances.
Every child is unique, and every family is a different environment. When parents proactively organize summer activities, the learning and living atmosphere is no longer confined to rigid patterns. One child might go to the countryside to experience nature, another might learn new technology skills, or a child might spend time at the swimming pool—all are living according to their own needs and abilities.
