(NLDO) - Due to information that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport is about to stop issuing and renewing driver's licenses, many people rushed to complete this procedure on February 17th.
At the driver's license renewal point No. 111 Tan Son Nhi, Tan Phu District, under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation, at 8:00 AM on February 17th, more than 100 people were waiting for their turn to process their driver's license renewal applications.
Right at the entrance, the Department of Transport posted a notice: "To prepare for the handover of driver's license examination and issuance responsibilities from the Ministry of Transport to the Ministry of Public Security , starting from February 19th, the Department of Transport will only accept applications for renewal or replacement of driver's licenses for automobiles that are valid for 1 to 10 days from the expiration date printed on the front of the license."
Upon reading this notice, many people carrying driver's licenses that expired in March or April rushed to the security guard for guidance.
A large number of people came to the driver's license renewal point at 111 Tan Son Nhi to complete the renewal procedures.
Two security guards are stationed at the application reception counter, along with one staff member sitting in front of the counter, continuously guiding people who come to renew their driver's licenses.
A security guard here said that in the past few days, a large number of people have come to renew their driver's licenses. Currently, the reception counters will process licenses that expired before March 15th. After March 15th, the renewal process will be transferred to the Ministry of Public Security. Therefore, people with driver's licenses that expired in April will be asked to return after February 20th to complete the process.
People are rushing to renew their driver's licenses before the transfer of responsibilities from the Ministry of Transport to the Ministry of Public Security.
Present at the office since 7 a.m., Mr. Pham Van Son (residing in Binh Tan District) said his Class C driver's license expired on March 5th, so he rushed here to renew it. Mr. Son arrived early at the driver's license renewal center, had his health check, and then took number 113. He sat there until 9:40 a.m., but the counters were only processing up to number 15. "I don't know how long I'll have to wait!" Mr. Son said.
Similarly, Mr. Lam Quang Binh (Binh Chanh district) said with frustration: "I waited from 7 am to 10 am, but the counter only processed up to number 20. At this rate, I'll probably have to wait until the afternoon to get my order processed."
Inside the driver's license renewal counter, there were quite a few people waiting to complete the procedures.
Upon entering the area where people are processing driver's license renewals, some reacted negatively when switching from a B2 license to a B license.
Despite being explained by staff that due to regulations under the Law on Traffic Order and Safety, the issuance and renewal of driver's licenses from January 1, 2025, will follow the new categories, Mr. T. still argued: "This will put people with B2 licenses at a disadvantage," because, according to him, a B2 license allows driving vehicles with a load capacity of up to 350 kg, and if he exchanges it for a B license, he will only be allowed to drive vehicles with both goods and a weight of 350 kg.
Many people waited for a long time, looking tired.
Unlike the crowded and overloaded driver's license renewal point in Tan Phu District, at 10 AM, at the driver's license renewal point at 8 Nguyen Anh Thu Street, District 12, under the Department of Transportation, there were about 40 people waiting to have their applications processed.
Mr. Tan (residing in District 12) said that he arrived at 8 a.m., the on-site health check took about 30 minutes, after which he took a number and prepared for his turn.
The driver's license renewal center at 8 Nguyen Anh Thu Street is less crowded.
According to a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, they are currently awaiting agreement from the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Transport regarding the timing for taking over the driver's license examination and renewal process before transferring the work. Therefore, after both sides reach an agreement, the Department of Transport will notify the public.
"However, to address the needs of the people, the driver's license renewal centers under the Department of Transport are still accepting driver's licenses that expired until March 15th," this representative said.
