Chi Pu's participation in a singing competition in China called "Sisters Riding the Waves" has sparked controversy about the standards a singer should meet.

Overconfident?
For most viewers, Chi Pu is not yet considered a singer because she lacks vocal talent, despite her constant efforts and investment in her work. Therefore, her participation in the "Sisters Riding the Waves" program (now renamed "Riding the Wind 2023") surprised many viewers.
Chi Pu has always been highly praised for her beauty, but her talent has always been met with mixed reviews despite her foray into many fields, from acting and singing to dancing… Chi Pu's singing voice is considered to lack timbre, often off-key during live performances, and unable to hit high notes.
Previously, Chi Pu's two music videos, "Black Hickey" ( Sovereignty Seal) and "Sashimi," received more negative than positive reactions. Some viewers felt the videos were cliché, lacked originality, and contained sensitive content. This led to "Black Hickey" disappearing from YouTube just a few days after its release, while "Sashimi" garnered only about 3.6 million views after one month. This is a relatively low number compared to Chi Pu's previous music videos.
In China, there have been many entertainment articles praising her beauty, calling her by flattering terms such as "Vietnam's number one beauty," not inferior to "the milk tea girl," or comparing her appearance to actresses Zhao Liying and Yang Mi. Thanks to her appearance that appeals to Chinese audiences, it's not surprising that Chi Pu and her team chose to try their luck in the Chinese entertainment industry.
In fact, the show's organizers extended invitations to many Vietnamese music stars, but they all declined, and ultimately Chi Pu was the one who accepted. Whether it was Chi Pu's ambition to expand her market or simply her participation for fun is debatable, but her excessive confidence in her singing ability has caused some concern among Vietnamese audiences.

Too much controversy...
The phenomenon of beauty queens turning to singing is not new, but it's becoming increasingly common. Many beauty queens in the past, when criticized by the audience for their singing abilities, would immediately stop. Nowadays, when faced with criticism, some claim it's "due to jealousy"; others ignore the feedback and release "unacceptable" musical products; and some promoters, wanting to attract attention, even invite beauty queens to perform regardless of the consequences.
Recently, a clip of runner-up Hoang Thuy performing at the finals of a beauty pageant has been circulating on social media. On stage, the beauty from Thanh Hoa wore a red dress showcasing her curves, performing the song "Bloody Happiness" with a dance troupe. This is also the song for which she recently released a music video. On a showbiz forum, some viewers commented that the 9X beauty only possesses a pleasant singing voice, not enough to become a singer or perform at events.
One viewer commented, "Her singing lacks any emotion." Another account stated, "She doesn't have the charisma of a singer. She should just stick to catwalks." Netizens remarked, "She's actually pretty, but her performance is like a school talent show from back in the day." "She's doing well at what she's doing, so she should keep it up and not pursue a singing career," another viewer advised.
Exactly 24 hours after the release of "The Deceitful Butterfly," Phi Phuong Anh shared the achievements of her product: reaching top 12 trending on YouTube, 1 million real-time views, top 1 on HOT14 Realtime, 13 million views on TikTok, 14,000 likes and 21,000 comments. And the number of dislikes reached 34,000, 2.5 times the number of likes on the first day of release.
While the song achieved success, the quality of the product is what truly matters. Netizens have found many similarities between "The Deceitful Butterfly" and Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese music, from the melody to the choreography. First, a section of the melody in Phi Phuong Anh's song is very similar to "Don't Be Stingy" by the Chinese group R1SE. Next, the melody is very familiar, reminiscent of "BBoom BBoom," which made the Korean group Momoland famous. The beginning of the song is similar to Momoland, while the ending is exactly like Blackpink.
The ending of "How You Like That" is practically copied verbatim into "The Deceptive Butterfly." Furthermore, the most impactful segment from Zico's "Okey Dokey," considered the song's signature move, is also present in "The Deceptive Butterfly."
Phi Phuong Anh's song has also been accused of plagiarizing music from Kpop groups such as Roly Poly (T-ara), Face (NU'EST)... turning the song "Canh Buom Doi Gian" into a hodgepodge of Kpop.
Speaking of choreography, the music video for "Cánh bướm dối gian" (Deceitful Butterfly) continues to be scrutinized for plagiarizing the choreography from TWICE's "Candy Pop," ITZY's "ICY," and even the choreography from Chi Pu's "Đóa hoa hồng" (Rose Flower) - a song by Phi Phuong Anh's idol.
According to experts, the trend of beauty queens becoming singers is developing in the Vietnamese youth music scene recently. Many beauty queens, models, and actresses are venturing into singing partly due to personal passion, a desire to prove themselves, and partly due to the increasing demand for singing among young audiences. This has led many beautiful women to dream of becoming singers, as in the cases mentioned above. However, due to a lack of real talent, few of these beauty queens succeed in singing, while many others cause controversy.
Composer Nguyen Van Chung affirmed: "Music must have aesthetic value; art must be beautiful. Music is a means of conveying and spreading positive emotions of love to each other, to the audience, and to the community. Without these things, it cannot be called music."
Singing seems to be one of the most alluring professions, so many beautiful women have been drawn to taking up the microphone and performing as singers. Miss H'hen Niê, seemingly simple and dedicated to her modeling career, has also ventured into singing. Actress Vũ Ngọc Anh's stage performances have drawn disapproval from viewers due to her revealing and provocative outfits. Misses Thúy Vân, Mai Phương, Lona, and others are all pursuing singing careers after winning their titles.
