In the flow of modern life, where traditional cultural values are in danger of being forgotten, Hoang Xuan Tuyen, born in 1999, a Tay ethnic minority from Kieu village, Xuan Giang commune (Quang Binh district), has chosen a unique path. With his intense love for traditional music , especially the Tinh lute and flute, he has become a role model for the younger generation in preserving and spreading traditional cultural identity.

Born and raised in the culturally rich environment of the Tay ethnic group, the sounds of the Tinh lute and Then melodies were deeply intertwined with Tuyen's childhood. However, societal development has caused these values to gradually fade in the eyes of the younger generation, which deeply troubled him and motivated him to do something to change that. In 2023, Tuyen began his journey of self-learning to play the Tinh lute and flute through online resources. With perseverance and effort, he quickly mastered the basic techniques, gradually conquering the simple, pure, yet profound melodies of the Tinh lute. For Tuyen, the lute is not just a musical instrument but also the embodiment of the soul of the Tay people, a bridge between the past and the present.

Sharing about this process, Tuyen said: “Initially, self-learning online wasn't easy because there was no one to guide me directly. I had to watch each video repeatedly, paying attention to everything from how to hold the instrument, how to strum the strings, to how to coordinate the rhythm with the lyrics. There were some difficult musical passages that I spent a whole week practicing over and over again. But what's special is that every time the music plays, I feel a connection to my roots. It's like a reminder that I'm contributing to preserving a precious part of my nation's heritage. The sound of the Tinh instrument and the flute brings a very special feeling. It makes me feel like I'm returning to childhood memories, when the whole family gathered around the fire, listening to grandparents tell old stories and sing Then songs. It's a peaceful feeling that I want to share with everyone, especially young people. I hope that traditional music will not only be a memory but will always be present, accompanying the younger generation in modern life.”

Not only did Tuyen learn on his own, but he also actively participated in local cultural activities. As a member of the Folk Artists Association of Xuan Giang commune, he regularly performed at events and cultural exchanges in the village and commune. Through each performance, he recounted stories about the origins of the musical instrument, the crafting of the zither, and the spiritual significance of the Then dance, helping people to better understand and appreciate its cultural value.

Mr. Hoang Van Binh, Chairman of the Folk Artists Association of Xuan Giang Commune, said: “Hoang Xuan Tuyen is a shining example in preserving the Tay ethnic culture. Tuyen is not only passionate about traditional musical instruments such as the Tinh lute and flute, but also has a deep awareness of preserving and spreading traditional values. He actively participates in cultural events, performs, and shares with the community the meaning and value of these instruments. Tuyen's perseverance and sense of responsibility truly inspire the younger generation, making an important contribution to preserving the local cultural identity.”

Through his efforts, Hoang Xuan Tuyen has become an inspiring flame, igniting a love for traditional music in the community. His Tinh lute and flute playing not only evoke traditional beauty but also open doors for the younger generation to better understand and appreciate their cultural heritage. In the digital age, Tuyen's efforts are like a refreshing stream, preserving the Tay cultural identity from fading away. It also serves as a reminder that, no matter how developed society becomes, cultural roots remain irreplaceable values that must be preserved and passed on to future generations. Hoang Xuan Tuyen, with his intense love and unwavering dedication, has been writing a beautiful story about the journey of cultural preservation. An inspiring story that extends cultural values from the past, present, and towards the future.
