What should people who often feel dizzy eat?

VnExpressVnExpress27/06/2023

Recently, I've been experiencing frequent dizziness and lightheadedness. Could you please advise me on which foods I should prioritize to help improve this condition? (Tran Lam, Ho Chi Minh City)

Reply:

Dizziness is a fairly common condition affecting many people, and can be caused by headaches, cerebral ischemia, or diseases of the inner ear, the vestibular-cochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII), and the brain. This is because the inner ear is responsible for sending signals to the brain, via the vestibular-cochlear nerve, about the movement of the head and body relative to gravity to help maintain balance.

In terms of nutrition, people who frequently experience dizziness should eat foods that are good for overall health and especially good for cerebral blood circulation. The general principle is to ensure adequate energy, sufficient vitamins and minerals, low sodium, high potassium, high fiber, and reduced saturated fatty acids and total fat.

You should prioritize foods that have anti-inflammatory properties, improve overall health, and boost the immune system. An anti-inflammatory diet includes foods such as fatty fish (salmon, basa, etc.), healthy oils, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.

The brain is made up of fat. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to improve nerve function, enhance cognitive abilities, and support the recovery of nerve cells after damage. You should eat plenty of omega-3-rich foods such as salmon, mackerel, walnuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, peanuts, etc., several times a week; avoid animal fat and organ meats.

Whole grains, rich in B vitamins, also help the brain function properly, transmitting nerve signals from the brain to the body's organs. Foods high in fiber, such as brown rice, along with plenty of green vegetables and ripe fruits, further increase the supply of potassium, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

In addition, you should increase your consumption of foods and drinks with sedative and diuretic properties, such as lotus seeds and lotus heart; and avoid alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine.

Dizziness can be caused by medical conditions such as vestibular neuritis, cerebral ischemia, migraine headaches, Meniere's disease (idiopathic hydrocephalus), trauma, or even as a sign of stroke, brain tumors, or brain abscesses. Therefore, if you experience prolonged dizziness, you should see a neurologist for examination and timely treatment.
