On the evening of April 10th, in an interview with a reporter from the Public Security Newspaper, Associate Professor Dr. Do Duy Cuong, Director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine at Bach Mai Hospital, stated that the hospital had just recorded a measles death case: a 51-year-old male patient, N.D.H., residing in Hanoi .

The patient had underlying conditions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Three days prior to admission, the patient developed a dry cough, fever, shortness of breath, and a rash spreading from the face down the body. The male patient was admitted for treatment for four days, after which his shortness of breath worsened, and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Bach Mai Hospital, with a diagnosis of measles complicated by pneumonia, and was treated with HFNC ventilation.

Subsequently, the patient's shortness of breath progressively worsened, and they were intubated and placed on a ventilator. After two days of intensive care, the patient developed septic shock and cardiac arrest. Emergency physicians resuscitated the patient, and their pulse returned. During treatment, the patient contracted a multidrug-resistant bacterial infection.

Some adults with severe measles require hospitalization.

The patient's condition worsened, and doctors performed dialysis and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to save their life. However, the patient did not respond and passed away.

This is the first adult measles death in our country in 2025.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Do Duy Cuong, compared to previous years, the number of measles patients hospitalized with severe complications is higher. The average age of measles patients admitted to the hospital is between 30 and 65 years old, with some 70-year-old patients still experiencing severe complications and requiring mechanical ventilation. This shows that measles should not be taken lightly; even adults with measles have a high risk of severe complications.

The Director of the Bach Mai Institute of Tropical Medicine also added that up to 75% of patients do not remember whether or not they have been vaccinated.

From the end of 2024 to the present, Bach Mai Institute of Tropical Medicine has examined and treated hundreds of measles patients, including many cases with severe complications such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, elevated liver enzymes, and some cases requiring invasive mechanical ventilation and ECMO intervention.
