Young and dynamic people

Instead of limiting themselves to a single job, today's young people tend to develop in different fields to accumulate more value.

The increasingly rapid and complex social changes are creating significant shifts in employment trends, especially among the dynamic Gen Z. Many members of this generation are choosing to "multitask" rather than prioritizing "mastering one skill for success."

Increase income, gain more experience.

After finishing her job as a marketing employee in District 3 at 5 PM, Nguyen Mai Huong (25 years old; residing in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City) goes to teach piano at a music center in Phu Nhuan District. This has been her regular schedule for the past year. Huong is not alone; many of her peers also have "side jobs." Some utilize their existing skills or talents to earn extra income, such as doing handicrafts, teaching drawing or vocal music, or working as ride-hailing drivers after work.

Besides that, many young people are proactively acquiring more knowledge to join the race of "working multiple jobs." Le Loc (28 years old, from Dong Nai province) currently runs a book and stationery business. As someone who pursues pickleball – a trendy sport today – Le Loc recognizes a market full of potential, from buying and selling training equipment and apparel, renting courts, to opening up new career opportunities: coaching. After coaching many players, Loc plans to attend coach and referee training courses organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports and the Ho Chi Minh City Tennis and Pickleball Federation with the determination to professionalize this work.

There are many different reasons that motivate young people to multitask, but generally, those who tend to multitask aim to increase their income and enhance their life experience. Many Gen Z explain that dedicating a large portion of their time to work helps them limit frivolous leisure activities and expenses, allowing them to focus their finances on larger, long-term goals such as buying a house, getting married, or studying abroad.

Hai Dang (second from the left) fulfills his role as a medical student by participating in internships, volunteer work, and event organization.

Take the initiative to choose your direction.

Dinh Hai Dang (23 years old, a dental student at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City) has organized many successful events, both large and small, serving young people. Among them, the most notable is Sap Show – a series of attractive art programs that drew a large number of students. Despite his busy schedule with hospital shifts and a demanding academic workload, Dang still strives to balance his responsibilities. Not only is he the person behind the operation, but Dang also serves as a media representative for many projects. With passion and a thirst for learning, Dang and his colleagues are gradually establishing their personal brand in the event management market. While prioritizing his studies, he undeniably finds event management very beneficial in enhancing his thinking and expanding his social network. This is also practical preparation for his future professional career.

Quang Anh (right in the photo) is always dedicated to every job.

For Nguyen Quang Anh (22 years old), experiences in diverse fields not only help young people hone their character and accumulate life experience, but also help them identify and determine the most suitable career path to commit to in the long term. Quang Anh is currently an accounting data entry specialist at a company that supplies furniture to the US. Having graduated with a degree in Business English and having taught and worked in customer service since his student days, he quickly overcame the initial awkwardness of getting acquainted with economic- related jobs that required extensive training. Quang Anh believes that experience and knowledge from many fields can be interconnected and complement each other. His guiding principle is to be serious and dedicated to whatever he does, putting his heart and responsibility into it.

An inevitable trend

According to a PwC Asia Pacific workforce survey of 19,500 workers in 14 countries, including 1,000 from Vietnam, 64% agreed that the skills required for their jobs will change significantly in the next five years. Up to 92% of Vietnamese workers felt ready to adapt to new ways of working. Therefore, expanding one's capabilities to develop oneself in diverse roles is an inevitable trend. Importantly, maintaining a work-life balance is crucial to ensure productivity and prevent the risk of physical and mental health decline due to overwork.
