"The Flame" of Literature and its mission to inspire

Having dedicated nearly 30 years to the noble profession of "nurturing future generations," Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong is even more confident in her choice. Her decision to dedicate herself to Literature stemmed from a love of the subject nurtured by her teachers during her time as a student at Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School. Today, her greatest wish is to instill that love of Literature in future generations of students.

In the context of rapid digital technology development and immense academic pressure, Gen Z and Gen Alpha students approach books and literature differently than before. Many students, including high-achieving ones, tend to read less or read in a "pragmatic" way, only serving short-term goals.

However, Ms. Hong believes that many young people still love books. Instead of worrying, she sees positive signs in how they spread their passion through new, dynamic, and effective forms: club activities, book reviews, organizing writing competitions, and utilizing digital technology to connect the book-loving community. She emphasizes that, no matter the era, books and a love of literature will always hold an irreplaceable place.

Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong's numerous provincial-level innovative teaching experiences in topics such as debate skills, communication, and reading culture are testament to her spirit of continuous innovation and creativity in teaching practice.

Regarding the core requirement of educational reform – shifting from teaching “knowledge” to developing “competencies and qualities” – Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong believes this is essentially a matter of methodology. Regardless of the era, focusing on developing competencies, guiding students on how to approach and acquire knowledge, and simultaneously cultivating self-improvement in character will be the most effective educational approach. This path helps students become independent and proactive in their learning, keeping the flame of passion for literature burning brightly,” Ms. Hong shared.

According to her, the greatest happiness for a Literature teacher is being able to pass on that "flame" to their students and witnessing their growth day by day.

The fact that Ms. Hong's class has consistently achieved the "Excellent" title for many years is proof of the important role of this enthusiastic teacher. She shared that being a homeroom teacher is a wonderful experience, providing an opportunity to bond more deeply with students. A homeroom teacher is not only someone who teaches knowledge but also someone who manages, guides, and leads the entire group, like a "captain." This is both a joy and an opportunity, but also a great responsibility and considerable pressure.

Create a positive learning environment.

According to Ms. Hong, the most important secret to fostering student engagement is building a cohesive, independent, and unified group working towards a common goal.

According to Ms. Hong, the most important secret to fostering student cohesion is building a united, self-reliant, and cohesive group focused on a common goal. In this group, each student feels like an "indispensable piece" of the class and becomes an active participant in building the collective. In this journey, the homeroom teacher acts as both a guide and a companion, providing support and making adjustments when necessary.

Regarding the issue of students with behavioral problems, Ms. Hong believes that the most important thing is how teachers support and accompany them on their journey to adulthood. "The first thing to do is to understand the root causes of these 'rebellions' and 'disobediences' with empathy, understanding, sharing, and without judgment. Each student has their own obstacles, requiring appropriate measures and support; we absolutely must not let them feel ashamed or lonely. To provide the best support, there needs to be coordination between parents, the school, organizations, and especially classmates," Ms. Hong shared.

Ms. Hong's greatest aspiration as a homeroom teacher is to build a "happy classroom"—a place where students learn in a positive environment, develop their talents, correct mistakes, and feel joy and pride in coming to class. Students are empowered to be autonomous and self-manage their classroom, while the homeroom teacher plays the role of guiding, advising, and supporting them.

Ms. Hong is also a person with many innovative teaching initiatives and solutions, stemming from the goals of the 2018 General Education Program. These solutions help students develop comprehensively in knowledge and skills (soft skills, life skills, and personal qualities). Through this, students develop language proficiency, critical thinking, and communication skills, becoming well-rounded, dynamic, creative, and adaptable individuals in the face of modern life's demands. Her initiatives in topics such as debate skills, communication, and reading culture have been recognized at the provincial level, demonstrating her spirit of continuous innovation and creativity from practical teaching.

Mr. Phan Xuan Phan, Principal of Huynh Thuc Khang High School, said: “With nearly 30 years in the teaching profession, Ms. Hong not only simply imparts knowledge but also ignites passion in many generations of students, especially in Literature. The school's greatest pride is when Ms. Hong was honored at the “Educational Talent Development Fund” award, becoming one of more than 20 outstanding figures in the field. This recognition is entirely deserved for her tireless contributions. Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong is truly a role model of enthusiasm, responsibility, and unwavering creativity in the career of ‘nurturing future generations’.”

The positive sign of more and more talented students returning to choose teaching as a profession further strengthens belief in the bright future of the field. Ms. Nguyen Minh Hong's story is a meaningful message to all colleagues and students: Always maintain your enthusiasm for the profession, nurture your passion, and boldly pursue your dreams. She is a living testament to the happiness and glory of the noble career of "nurturing future generations."
