The book "Nguyệt Lãng - Literature and Life" is a special work, compiled and edited by the Bình Phước Provincial Association of Literature and Arts to honor the poet Nguyệt Lãng, an author who profoundly influenced the literary life of the province. The book is not simply an anthology; it is also a treasure trove of valuable documents, truthfully reflecting the life and soul of the people of Bình Phước in particular, and Southern Vietnam in general.
Divided into four parts, "Nguyet Lang - Literature and Life" includes poems, prose, music, and images, inscriptions, and eulogies. The book encompasses various genres, each with its own unique style, but all focusing on a common theme: celebrating the beauty of the impoverished countryside, home to honest, generous, and compassionate farmers. Each page in "Nguyet Lang - Literature and Life" is not merely words but a culmination of emotions, everyday stories full of meaning. The author has captured the aspirations of the people here, from hardship and deprivation to grand dreams. The writing style is rich in emotion, delving into the lives and thoughts of the people, leaving the reader deeply moved.
The land of old never betrays its people.
Receive sweat in return with potatoes and cassava.
Blood and bone are paid for with food and comfort.
A person with love for the land will have fragrant flowers.
(Excerpt from "Love for the Eastern Land")
Reader Pham Thi Hoai Thuong from Tan Dong ward, Dong Xoai city shared: "I almost only knew Nguyet Lang through his poetry, but only when I held the book 'Nguyet Lang - Literature and Life' in my hands did I realize that his work is the result of a process of gathering and accumulating knowledge and life experiences, making it 'more and more mature'. I like Nguyet Lang's way of reminiscing and pouring out his heart on the pages, writing about childhood memories and loved ones. In those moments, his poetry is so genuine, whispering, and intimate: 'Our house is far from the village market / My mother carried cabbage across three fields / She had to cross a whole river / Small in the vastness was the ferry / The gifts and cakes my mother gave / To me are all the sweet memories of my childhood' (excerpt from 'The Ferry of Childhood')."
Beyond its artistic value, the book also holds profound cultural significance. It helps readers better understand the history, culture, and people of Binh Phuoc, a land not only blessed with beautiful scenery but also with historical landmarks, resilient people, and a deep sense of love and pride. “Cycling around the mountain town / Taking you to find a peaceful sleep / Hesitating between clouds and hair / Who leans towards the full lake / My heart has longed to confess / To you this declaration of love / So that in dreams I can soothe you / Sleeping peacefully between hair and clouds” (excerpt from “Phuoc Long Mountain Town”).
Born in Ben Tre and living in the eastern region, few people know that Nguyet Lang is the author of the poem "Bitter Herbs of the Earth," which was adapted into lyrics by musician Bac Son for the famous song "Still Loving the Bitter Herbs Growing Behind the House." In his literary career in general, and in Binh Phuoc in particular, author Nguyet Lang has made many valuable contributions and left a deep impression on readers. He has participated in and won many high awards in writing competitions, most notably winning first prize for poetry and short stories for two consecutive years (2010-2011) organized by the Binh Phuoc Provincial Association of Literature and Arts.
"Nguyet Lang - Literature and Life" is a truthful work of art about life and people. For those who love literature and want to learn about their homeland of Binh Phuoc, this is definitely a book not to be missed. The words in the book will forever resonate, reminding us of the value of love for our homeland and the aspiration to strive for success in life. |
