The high-quality rice variety TMR97, tested in Phu Luong, yielded good results.

Testing new high-quality rice varieties.

Early in the morning, farmers gathered at Phu Luong 1 Agricultural Cooperative (Phu Luong commune). Everyone was chatting, exchanging ideas, and discussing enthusiastically about the new, high-quality, high-yield rice variety TBR97, which the Phu Vang District Agricultural Service Center, in collaboration with Thaibinh Seed Group JSC - North Central Branch, is implementing as a trial model in the fields of Phu Luong 1 Agricultural Cooperative.

At this moment, the rice pot, cooked with freshly harvested TBR97 rice, emitted a fragrant aroma. Along with the farmers present, I slowly savored the rich sweetness, the softness, and the chewiness of each grain of rice. Smiles bloomed on sun-weathered faces, reflecting satisfaction. Many farmers in the cooperative gathered around Mr. Ho Viet Dien – the first person in Phu Luong to experimentally cultivate the TBR97 rice variety on 0.5 hectares – to learn from his experience.

“Since my nephew, who works as a combine harvester operator in the northern provinces, praised the advantages of the TBR97 rice variety, I intended to try growing it. So when our locality implemented a model for this rice variety, I seized the opportunity and planted it in this year's winter-spring crop. Through practical production, this rice variety has shown many advantages and benefits, such as: using less fertilizer; fewer pests and diseases; only needing to spray pesticides once from when the rice starts to flower at 40-50%; good growth, and more tillering than other varieties. Older varieties required 7 kg of seeds per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), but the TBR97 rice variety only needs 4.5 kg per sao,” Mr. Dien shared about his experience and the economic benefits that the TBR97 rice variety has brought.

In fact, at the field where Mr. Ho Viet Dien's family is conducting the trial, seeing the rice plants heavy with grain and ready for harvest in about 5-7 days, the farmers are even more satisfied.

According to Mr. Doan Thao, Director of the Phu Vang District Agricultural Services Center: Assessment shows that the TBR97 rice variety has a growth period equivalent to the control variety, suitable for the soil conditions and the rice crop structure of the winter-spring season in the area. The model rice variety has the ability to tiller densely, with a compact form; it grows and develops well, is strong, and has a lower susceptibility to pests and diseases compared to the control variety; it yields high productivity, expected to reach 72 quintals/hectare; the rice grains are long, beautiful, and the cooked rice is soft, fragrant, and has a distinctive flavor that suits consumer preferences. The milling rate is relatively high at 68-72%. The results are outstanding in terms of quality, yield, and especially its resistance to lodging under current climate change conditions.

Mr. Cao Duc Nhan, Director of Thua Thien Hue Agricultural One-Member Limited Company, affirmed: The company guarantees the implementation of a product purchase and distribution linkage model for farmers in Phu Vang district, with the highest priority given to this new TBR97 rice variety.

“The company will make initial investments in seeds, supplies, fertilizers, and pesticides. At the end of the season, the company will buy back the fresh rice and deduct the investment costs for the farmers. The purchase price will be based on thick-grained varieties – high-quality varieties – ensuring sustainable benefits for the people,” Mr. Nhan said.

Moving towards mass production.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Phu Vang district, the district places great emphasis on developing new high-yield, disease-resistant varieties for large-scale planting, minimizing risks during production.

Besides high-quality rice varieties such as TBR97 JO2, KH1(DT 100), HN6, TU 8, HP3, VN10, VN20, HG12, HG244..., which account for 41.1% of the rice varieties already introduced into the district's crop structure, the use of TBR97 rice in production at Phu Luong 1 Agricultural Cooperative serves as a basis for considering and selecting new, suitable rice varieties with high yield, quality, and economic efficiency, increasing farmers' income per unit area, and supplementing the seed source structure of the commune and the district.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tan also stated that, regarding the TMR97 rice variety, the district has implemented a trial model at Phu Da 2 Agricultural Cooperative for three seasons; from the initial 2 hectares of trial land, it has now increased to 55 hectares with high efficiency. Currently, the district is focusing on linking with businesses. The entire 55 hectares of TMR97 rice are under contract with Thua Thien Hue Agricultural Company Limited.

Thua Thien Hue Agricultural Company Limited is also ready to establish a product purchasing agreement and stabilize output for farmers in Phu Vang, especially prioritizing the new high-quality rice variety TMR97. This is an opportunity for farmers in Phu Vang to develop production and cultivation in a sustainable and efficient manner.
