Ancelotti's toughest task

Taking on the role of head coach of the Brazilian national team, Carlo Ancelotti faced a challenge unlike anything he had encountered in his career: reviving a footballing nation.

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of coach Ancelotti's coaching career. In 30 years, he has managed 10 teams (including two stints with Real Madrid), but this will be the first time he takes on the role of head coach of a national team.

The Unbeatable Coach

Ancelotti's salary for his new job amounts to 9.2 million euros, making him the highest-paid national team coach in the world .

Not only that, the Brazilian Football Confederation also provided him with a range of extremely ideal working conditions such as tight security, private jet transportation, and promising bonuses. Simply leading the Brazilian team to the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup would earn Ancelotti a 20% salary increase. And if they win, the bonus will be 5 million euros.

However, compared to the responsibility the Italian strategist faces, the compensation he receives pales in comparison. Strategists like Ancelotti are always sought after by big clubs when they are on a downward spiral.

That's the situation Ancelotti faced at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Everton... With a timeframe of 2-3 years per team, Ancelotti is categorized as a coach who is good at adapting and can quickly meet demands, but not someone who builds long-term systems and foundations.

Except for Juventus in the early years of his career, wherever Coach Ancelotti has gone, he has reaped major titles. Even during periods considered less successful, such as when he coached PSG or Bayern Munich, Ancelotti still won national championships. This makes Ancelotti special: a coach who seems to have never known failure.

Brazilian football has no shortage of talent.

But with those characteristics, Coach Ancelotti is almost only suitable for wealthy teams that already have a strong squad or ample budget to strengthen their ranks in a short time. Ancelotti is completely different from Guardiola or Klopp - coaches who are good at building systems. And when it comes to managing the Brazilian national team, that's an even more complex responsibility.

The Brazilian national team is currently experiencing its worst period of form in history. Since 2006, Brazil has participated in five World Cups but has only reached the semi-finals once. In their last two World Cups, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Between 1982 and 1990, Brazil also failed to reach the World Cup semi-finals three times in a row. However, during that period, they won the Copa America. In contrast, the current Brazilian team is performing poorly in all competitions, to the point that in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Brazil struggled and still faces the risk of losing what seemed like a sure thing.

Is Brazilian football lacking talent? No. They remain one of the footballing nations with many world-class stars. Specifically, Ancelotti will have two top-tier goalkeepers in Alisson and Ederson. In defense, Brazilian football has a host of top defenders such as Marquinhos, Gabriel, Murillo, Militao...

In midfield, while Brazil may not have an abundance of talent, they still have many quality options such as Bruno Guimares, Ederson, Douglas Luiz... And in attack, Brazilian football still boasts a host of world-class players who can compete for the Ballon d'Or, such as Rodrygo, Vinicius, Raphinha...

However, there are still some shortcomings in the Brazilian squad, such as the lack of a true playmaker as Neymar has lost his form. Paqueta is not yet good enough to lead a top team like Brazil. And in the center forward position, Brazil doesn't have many options.

But overall, no footballing nation is perfect. For example, England has always lacked a goalkeeper, Spain lacks a center forward... With Brazil, their problem lies in attitude and teamwork – a truly difficult challenge for coach Ancelotti.

The most successful strategist in contemporary football has accepted the offer to lead the greatest team in history, but don't be surprised if Coach Ancelotti fails.
