Many ways to identify fake certificates.

However, according to Master's degree holder Do Nguyen Dang Khoa, a visiting lecturer at the University of Economics and Finance Ho Chi Minh City, there are several ways to visually identify these fraudulent IELTS score reports.

Specifically, according to Mr. Khoa, counterfeit certificates often have a different font than the surrounding characters. Secondly, the component scores do not match the overall rounded score as per IELTS regulations. Thirdly, the board code may not match the examination board. "Finally, the candidate code (TRF code) usually contains the first three letters of the last name. If the candidate has one last name but a different last name is written, it is very likely a fake certificate," Mr. Khoa stated.

Concurring, Mr. Hoang Anh Khoa, Academic Director of The M-english Home (Ho Chi Minh City), also stated that the candidate code is a crucial "key" because many individuals who forge certificates do not understand the meaning of this number sequence. "However, it's very difficult to detect if you encounter a professional team. Furthermore, the certificate verification services offered by IDP and the British Council are no longer as widely available as before," Mr. Khoa shared.

International English language certificates are allegedly fake.

Therefore, to recruit quality personnel, Mr. Khoa believes that evaluating candidates should not only be based on IELTS scores but also on many other factors. For example, Mr. Khoa will ask candidates to conduct a trial lesson to assess their speaking skills, and if their grammar in speaking is "problematic," this will also reflect on their writing skills. "Then, during the trial period, I also ask candidates to share their knowledge and watch videos of their teaching sessions. Certificates can be faked, but the teaching process cannot," Mr. Khoa said.

Tran Thanh Vu, a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Education, Durham University (UK), expressed concern about the current market for "buying" fake IELTS certificates. Vu cited an example where some places advertise that for just $4,900 (118 million VND), an applicant's information will be "updated on a global system." He also noted that a high IELTS score does not necessarily equate to good teaching ability, and vice versa. The rush to achieve high scores, even resorting to buying fake certificates, could lead to unpredictable consequences.

"The recruitment process will depend heavily on the center, and whether or not you are hired will mainly depend on the trial teaching session. In reality, many people who haven't graduated from university or studied a field related to English can still be accepted as teachers. However, it should be noted that a short trial teaching session, usually only 20 minutes, will hardly reflect the candidate's teaching ability," Mr. Vu stated.

From an admissions perspective, Andy Pham, Senior Mekong Region Manager at the Australian National University, asserts that applicants cannot falsify certificates such as IELTS or PTE to apply for study abroad programs. This is because universities have their own accounts to access the IELTS database to verify whether the scores are accurate and belong to the correct individual.

"As for the PTE certificate, the exam organizing unit directly reports the scores to the school, so there's no way to falsify them. If there's a violation, we will not only cancel the application but also record the name of the applicant who committed the fraud in the school's system. Furthermore, if this applicant submitted their application through study abroad centers that are partners of the school, we will also hold that center accountable," Mr. Andy noted.
