Many lawyers participated in the defense free of charge.

On June 10th, Mr. Pham Ngoc Thach (residing in Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province) stated that, according to a notice from the Nghe An Provincial People's Court, the appeal hearing for his wife, Ms. Le Thi Dung (51 years old, former Director of the Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center of Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province), will take place at 8:00 AM on June 12th and will be held publicly.

The police searched Ms. Dung's workplace.

According to Mr. Thach, there are currently seven lawyers providing free legal defense for his wife. They have completed the necessary procedures to participate in the trial in accordance with the law.

Earlier on April 24, the People's Court of Hung Nguyen District concluded the first-instance trial and sentenced the defendant Le Thi Dung (former Director of the Continuing Education Center of Hung Nguyen District) to 5 years in prison for the crime of Abusing Position and Authority while Performing Official Duties.

According to the case file, the Hung Nguyen District Continuing Education Center (now the Hung Nguyen District Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center) is a self-financing public service unit that partially covers its regular operating costs and operates under the autonomous management regime as stipulated in Government Decree No. 43/2006/ND-CP dated April 25, 2006.

On October 1, 2012, Ms. Le Thi Dung was appointed by the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province as the Director of the Continuing Education Center of Hung Nguyen district for the term 2012-2017.

After her appointment, Ms. Dung annually directed the accounting department, specialized teams, and the trade union of the center to advise on and develop regulations for professional activities and internal spending from 2012 to 2017.

During the academic years from 2011-2016, Le Thi Dung made the first payment for the following expenses: Party branch secretary; support for postgraduate studies and training, and examinations, in accordance with regulations, totaling 36,695,000 VND.

Although the first payment was made, Le Thi Duy continued to convert the expenses related to the Party branch secretary; support for postgraduate studies and training/examination into teaching hours to pay for overtime (second payment) amounting to nearly 45 million VND. This money was transferred to Le Thi Dung's personal account.

The indictment from the People's Procuracy of Hung Nguyen District charged Le Thi Dung with causing damage to the state budget twice, thus committing the crime of "Abusing position and power while performing official duties" as stipulated in point b, clause 2, Article 356 of the Penal Code.

Following the conclusion of the first-instance trial, defendant Le Thi Dung filed an appeal against the entire first-instance judgment. The People's Procuracy of Nghe An province filed an appeal requesting the Provincial People's Court to conduct an appellate trial with the aim of overturning the first-instance judgment and ordering a reinvestigation and retrial.
