Not only fruits, but many types of vegetables have also seen a sharp drop in price after Tet. Traders are selective in their purchases, only selling batches of good quality at high prices.
According to the General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the sharp drop in agricultural product prices is due to several factors. First, the Chinese market – which consumes a large portion of some Vietnamese fruits – is tightening quarantine and quality standards. Meanwhile, many domestic testing laboratories are overloaded or temporarily closed, prolonging the testing process and increasing risks for traders.
Furthermore, the market is in a transitional phase before the full implementation of new traceability and acreage code requirements under the Protocol and Order 280 from June 1, 2026. Purchasing agents are therefore becoming cautious, only buying in limited quantities to avoid the risk of goods being returned at border crossings. Pressure also stems from rising logistics costs.
