More than 20 new plays, ranging from traditional Vietnamese opera to spoken drama, will be presented to audiences in Ho Chi Minh City during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake.
On the afternoon of January 12th, the IDECAF Theatre held a rehearsal of the comedy "Whatever is fun, we prioritize it" by author and director Nguyen Tam Anh. Prior to this, the theatre had also rehearsed "Luong Son Ba - Chuc Anh Dai: An Unofficial Story," promising a boisterous start to the new year with laughter.
Comedy is taking over the airwaves.
The Saigon Flat Stage of the World Youth Theatre will present the comedy "The Haunted House" (written and directed by Gia Bao), blending humor with a story that carries humanistic values and emphasizes a message of awakening. The Saigon Flat Stage of the World Youth Theatre will also feature "The Great Uproar in Mumbai," an Indian-inspired play that celebrates the value of sincere, selfless love.
The Hong Van Theatre staged the play "The Body of a Caterpillar, the Soul of a Butterfly," a hilarious yet touching performance that emphasizes family bonds, highlighting that no matter how difficult life is, parents and family remain a constant support system for children. The Ho Chi Minh City Small Stage Theatre (also known as Stage 5B) revived the play "Beauty Regardless," a lighthearted and humorous piece revolving around the theme of "good character trumps beauty."
The Truong Hung Minh Art Theatre presents the play "Just Enough to Use," a simple, cheerful piece reminding people to preserve Southern Vietnamese cultural customs and traditions during Tet (Lunar New Year). The play "Shocking the Three Realms," a period drama, features sharp, satirical humor. The Thien Dang Theatre presents "13 Masters, Master 13" (written by Ngoc Thach, directed by Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc), promising a boost to the stage with its humorous story and profound satirical message.

Director Ton That Can, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, observed that audiences have a desire to relieve stress and relax during Tet (Lunar New Year), so art organizations often stage comedies to easily sell tickets. "Artists also want to share laughter with the audience at the beginning of the year and convey positive energy, so the plays focus on promoting human values, living a good life for society, and using laughter to criticize social ills," Mr. Ton That Can expressed.
Tragedy is still popular.
This year, themes of tragedy and horror are still being explored. This is unusual, as in previous years some theaters were hesitant to tackle these topics due to superstition. Specifically, the Xom Kich Theater staged two plays: "Sleepwalking" and "The Soul Thief" at the experimental theater of the Ho Chi Minh City Dance College (155 Bis Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3). Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang shared: "If a play has good content and attractive actors, any theme will find an audience. The question is, after all the sad stories, the tears and sorrow… what is the final message to send to the audience in the early days of spring?"
People's Artist Hong Van believes that the theater scene is rejuvenating both actors and audiences, so the "luck" factor in play content is no longer something to be avoided. Educational content that teaches people to live better lives is what theaters are focusing on this Tet season. This Tet, Hong Van's theater will be staging plays such as "The Silent Room," "The Ghost Wife," and "The Abandoned House"...
The Hoang Thai Thanh theater staged a tear-jerking tragedy every year, and this year it will be "Short and Long Strands of Hair." The Hong Hac theater will premiere "If I Were Still Alive," directed by Viet Linh, creating a profound impact with its story about war, vividly and emotionally portrayed by a cast of young actors.
There are three plays for children this Tet holiday season: "The Magic Pen" (Ho Chi Minh City Small Stage Theatre), "Penny - Oh, How Wonderful" (Ban Mai Stage - Ho Chi Minh City Children's House), and "The Brown Planet" (Quoc Thao Stage). According to those involved, these three plays are educational and colorful, perfectly suited to children's age group.
The Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) scene in Ho Chi Minh City also offers many options, such as the play "Nhi Ho Diep, Hiep Nhat Hoa" performed at the Nu Cuoi Theater (6 Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street, District 1); Thien Long Theater staging "Tu Hi Lam Mon" and "Cao Quan Bao Dai Chien Du Hong"; Tran Huu Trang Theater reviving two classic works "Doi Co Luu" and "Tieng Ho Song Hau"; and Chi Linh - Van Ha Theater staging "Van Vo Ky Duyen"…
