“The Soul of Jade Poetry” is a collection of scripts by playwright Lê Duy Hạnh, produced by the late artist's family and recently released to the public. The publication includes eight famous scripts: “Remembering the Old Moon Season,” “Moving the Capital,” “Two Shores,” “Modern Fairy Tales,” “Fragrant Porcelain,” “Moonlight,” “The Soul of Traditional Opera,” and “The Soul of Jade Poetry.” The works cover a variety of themes and genres, including historical cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera), social cải lương, traditional opera, experimental cải lương, and solo performances. These scripts have left a significant mark on the stage or won awards at national cải lương theater festivals. Reading each page of the scripts, readers can visualize the roles and plays that are deeply etched in their memories. At the same time, they remember the kind playwright, wholeheartedly devoted to the beauty of traditional theater.
Previously, many collections of Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) scripts by playwright Le Duy Hanh have been released to the public, such as "Collection of Cai Luong Scripts by Playwright Le Duy Hanh," "Collection of Le Duy Hanh - Memories," "As in Legend," etc. Among the hundreds of scripts he has written, playwright Le Duy Hanh demonstrates his versatility and diligence, alongside his willingness to experiment with new forms. The greatest mark in Le Duy Hanh's scripts is his focus on historical themes, with memorable plays such as "Ngoc Han's Confessions," "King Thanh of the Le Dynasty," "The Sun of the Night Century," "The Queen of Two Kings," "The Swan's Dress," etc.
***
During his lifetime, playwright Lê Duy Hạnh held a deep affection for Cần Thơ . He frequently visited Cần Thơ to see friends, compose music, and engage in various artistic activities there, starting about 20 years ago.
For the writer, two works by playwright Le Duy Hanh that were performed in Can Tho City will always be remembered: "Land of Memories" and "Everlasting Faith".
It was a day in January 2008, at the Turtle Hall, Can Tho University (now Can Tho University), when the Vietnam Television Center in Can Tho City and Hau Giang Provincial Radio and Television Station broadcast live the Cai Luong play "Memories of the Land" by author Le Duy Hanh, directed by Meritorious Artist Bach Tuyet (now People's Artist Bach Tuyet). The play was set in the Cot Cau valley in Phong Dien, telling the story of a theater manager devoted to his homeland despite facing temptations and persecution from the enemy. Many artists performed this play, such as Vu Luan, Hai Yen, Hoang Nhat, Huu Quoc, Lich Su, Duy Thanh, etc., captivating hundreds of student audience members. Beneath the stage lights, the gentle playwright sat watching, attentively observing every detail.
The second play that the author still remembers is "Everlasting Faith" by playwright Le Duy Hanh, which was broadcast live by VTV Can Tho in the program "Harmony of the Nine Dragon Land" in 2015. Through captivating storytelling using the art of Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera), playwright Le Duy Hanh beautifully portrayed the images of the two revolutionaries Le Hong Phong and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. Cai Luong is beautiful from its story, characters, plot, to its dialogue, lyrics, and songs... The talent of playwright Le Duy Hanh shines brightly through this work.
In commemoration of the second anniversary of the passing of playwright Le Duy Hanh, I would like to recall a few words…
