Moving forward with students

“There are no weak students, only students who have not received proper attention” is the motto throughout 26 years of dedication to the career of educating people of Mr. Dam Thanh Lac - Principal of Giong Rieng High School.

To Mr. Lac, each student is a green shoot that needs to be nurtured with love and trust. Mr. Lac always remembers the story in 1999 when, as a young teacher, in a moment of anger, he reprimanded a student who was often late and did not know his lessons. The next day, the student dropped out of school. Feeling troubled, he cycled more than 10km to his home to persuade him to return to class. When he learned that his student was an orphan, living with his elderly grandmother, and had to wake up at 4am every day to hitchhike to school, he was speechless. That afternoon, Mr. Lac told himself: "A teacher should not only teach but also love his students first." And then, from a dedicated teacher to a manager in many units, Mr. Lac always clearly demonstrated a leadership style of discipline, love and responsibility.

In management work, Mr. Lac focuses on school education , paying attention to tutoring weak students and helping poor students. All policies and plans of the school are aimed at the progress of each student, because Mr. Lac believes: "Education not only creates knowledge but also forms personality so that students can become useful people for society."

Not only is he an exemplary manager, Mr. Lac is also a typical example in the patriotic emulation movement of the education sector. Mr. Lac was honored to receive the Third Class Labor Medal, a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister , 5 times as a provincial-level emulation soldier, and many ministerial and provincial-level awards for writing competitions and educational initiatives. Mr. Lac's efforts not only brought about noble achievements and titles for individuals but also together with the collective marked a long career in education. Giong Rieng High School has achieved many outstanding achievements such as meeting national standards at level 2 and quality accreditation at level 3 in 2024; many consecutive years of having excellent students at the national level, a graduation rate of 100%, and being continuously recognized as an excellent labor collective. From the 2020-2021 school year to the 2024-2025 school year, the school received the Government's emulation flag twice; 1 time awarded emulation flag by Provincial People's Committee and 2 times awarded certificate of merit.

According to Mr. Lac, the patriotic emulation movement is not just a slogan but a daily action in every lesson, every small thing for students. From the sincerity of the teacher, the flame of emulation spreads throughout the collective, becoming the driving force to help teachers and students move forward together. "The greatest reward for me is not the certificate of merit but the maturity of the students. Emulation is patriotism, love for the profession, love for one's students," Mr. Lac expressed.

People's Health Care

As Party Secretary and Director of An Giang General Hospital, Dr. Nguyen Duy Tan always upholds the sense of responsibility, performs well assigned tasks, and works with the unit to complete the set targets and plans.

In September 2021, when the COVID-19 epidemic broke out, Dr. Tan was assigned by the Department of Health to manage the Phu Tan District Medical Center (old) for 5 weeks in disease prevention and control work. During the process of participating in disease prevention and control, Dr. Tan and the steering committee established quarantine and treatment areas for F0 and F1 and was awarded a certificate of merit by the People's Committee of An Giang province (old) for his outstanding achievements in COVID-19 prevention and control. For many consecutive years, Dr. Tan has been a provincial-level emulation fighter; was awarded the title of excellent physician; and a certificate of merit by the Provincial People's Committee for his achievements in implementing Directive 05-CT/TW of the Politburo on promoting the study and following of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and lifestyle in the period 2016 - 2021.

Since November 2022, trusted by the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Health to be the Director of An Giang Central General Hospital (now An Giang General Hospital), Dr. Tan has performed his work well with a high sense of responsibility, together with the unit completing the set targets and plans. Dr. Tan always upholds the principle of democratic centralism, regularly listens to and accepts comments and contributions; respects the collective and colleagues, fights against negative manifestations that cause internal disunity. At the same time, he always cares about the material and spiritual life of civil servants and workers; regularly learns and listens to the thoughts, aspirations, recommendations and proposals of the departments and offices in charge.

Dr. Tan has conducted many scientific research projects such as applying the Morisky scale to evaluate drug compliance in Parkinson's patients at the hospital's neurology clinic; evaluating the practice of using gloves and masks of medical staff at the Department of Intensive Care and Anti-Poison and the Department of Surgical Intensive Care at the hospital; studying the treatment results of patients with traumatic brain injury at the Department of Surgical Intensive Care; the effectiveness of improving the treatment process of cerebral infarction with thrombolytic drugs... contributing to improving the quality of treatment, worthy of a grade 1 hospital, specialized level, the front line in treatment of the provincial health sector.

Growing clean rice to enrich the homeland

Duong Go Lo Farmer's Agricultural Cooperative, Long Thanh Commune, was established at the end of 2015, with 54 members, with a total production area of over 85 hectares, mainly growing rice. Up to now, the cooperative has developed production on a total area of 225 hectares, with 162 members. Farmers in the cooperative use clean rice growing methods, high-quality rice varieties such as Dai Thom 8, ST24, ST25, and Japanese rice DS1. At the same time, they provide services such as pumping, plowing, signing contracts to supply fertilizers, pesticides, rice seeds, harvesting and linking product consumption for members.

To help farmers increase profits, as the harvest season approaches, Mr. Nguyen Hong Phuong - Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director of the Duong Go Lo Farmer Agricultural Cooperative and the cooperative's leadership invited more than 10 companies and businesses to participate in the rice purchase auction, negotiate conditions on harvest date, means of transportation and payment methods, helping farmers have stable output. Currently, the cooperative has contracts with Loc Troi Group and Thoai Son Rice Limited Liability Company to supply rice seeds and purchase products. The businesses purchase 225 hectares of land for producing Japanese rice varieties DS1 and Dai Thom 8 of cooperative members at prices 200 - 500 VND/kg higher than the market price; the average yield reaches 6.8 tons/ha, contributing to a total revenue of 8.6 billion VND/225ha.

According to Mr. Hong Phuong, the cooperative hopes that the locality and province will have mechanisms and policies for banks to support preferential loans, with installment payments but without mortgaging assets so that the cooperative has the financial capacity to invest in plowing and tilling machines, combine harvesters, row seeders, cluster seeders, etc. This aims at the common goal of increasing income for cooperative members; having capital to buy agricultural materials from the factory at original price, investing in the production of clean rice, high-quality rice, reducing intermediary costs, increasing profits, and getting rich right in the homeland.
