From humble homes
The family of Mr. Dao Van Chien in Hamlet 7 (Vinh Lai Commune) is one of 114 exemplary families in the movement to build culturally advanced families over the past 25 years. At over 80 years old, the veteran still daily cares for his bees to collect honey, participates in the Veterans Association activities, and engages in community activities.
Mr. Chien's house is always filled with the sounds of his children and grandchildren. His three children are all grown up, have stable jobs, and many of his grandchildren have achieved high academic results. He was one of the first to participate in establishing the village's scholarship fund. To this day, the fund has become a support system helping many students overcome difficulties and succeed.
His family also voluntarily donated land to expand rural roads, actively participated in building new rural areas, maintaining security and order, and protecting the environment. “A cultured family isn't something grand. It's about each person knowing how to live decently, knowing how to be considerate, and knowing how to contribute to the neighborhood. When families are happy, the residential area is also more peaceful…,” Mr. Chien shared.
In a small house in Phu Xa 1 residential area (Dong Hai ward), 83-year-old Bui Thi Tham and her son tend to their family's vegetable garden. Although her husband passed away early and she is a busy teacher, Mrs. Tham has never neglected caring for her family. Single-handedly fulfilling many roles, she has always strived to raise her son to be responsible and mature adults.
She currently lives with her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren in a warm and harmonious atmosphere. The adults set a good example for the children, and the children and grandchildren are filial and well-behaved. "Seeing my children and grandchildren grow up to be mature and well-behaved makes me very happy. The secret to a harmonious and joyful family is the love and support among family members in everything from work to life," Mrs. Tham said.
Families like Mr. Chien and Mrs. Tham, along with millions of others, are the "nucleus" that preserves the traditional values of Vietnamese families. The title "Culturally Exemplary Family" is not only a recognition but also a motivation for each individual to live more responsibly towards themselves, their families, and society.
25 years of nurturing a cultured family.

Over the past 25 years, the "Culturally Advanced Family" movement has become one of the important pillars of the "National Unity in Building a Culturally Advanced Life" movement in Hai Phong .
According to the report from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the movement has received close guidance and attention from Party committees, government agencies, and relevant sectors. Many practical models have been developed and replicated, such as "Happy Family," "Sustainable Family Development," "Domestic Violence Prevention Club," and the Code of Conduct within the Family, contributing to raising awareness and responsibility among people in building a happy home. The percentage of culturally exemplary families citywide has reached over 95% in recent years.
The most noticeable effect is the strengthening of moral values and lifestyles within families. Thousands of awareness campaigns, training sessions, competitions, and family festivals have been organized, contributing to improving skills in building happy families, preventing domestic violence, and educating children.
The movement has also made a positive contribution to economic development and the construction of new rural areas. Many families have boldly transformed their production models, developed their economies, created jobs, and increased their incomes. This has led to the emergence of many effective production and business models, contributing to local economic development.
In particular, the movement contributes to maintaining political security and social order. Culturally exemplary families are always a core force in upholding the law, mediating conflicts at the grassroots level, and participating in self-governing models for security, order, and fire prevention and control.
Along with promoting traditional moral values, Hai Phong has implemented many innovative activities in family affairs such as organizing competitions, festivals, seminars, and training courses; building hundreds of models for preventing domestic violence, thousands of trusted addresses in the community, and many sustainable family development clubs.
These changes are clearly felt at the grassroots level. Ms. Hoang Thi Lieu, head of the Phu Xa residential group (Dong Hai ward), said: “Previously, mobilizing people to participate in community movements was not always easy. But when the movement to build culturally exemplary families was widely implemented, people's awareness changed significantly. Many families voluntarily comply with local regulations, actively participate in environmental sanitation, contribute to infrastructure development, and maintain security and order.”
Entering a new phase, amidst urbanization, international integration, and the strong impact of digital technology, the task of building families continues to face many challenges. However, the achievements of the past 25 years provide a solid foundation for Hai Phong to continue promoting the role of the family in its development.
Happy families create happy communities, and happy communities create sustainably developing cities. This is also the greatest value that the "Culturally Advanced Family" movement has brought and continues to bring to Hai Phong today.
