Gift boxes that evoke fond memories

Báo Đà NẵngBáo Đà Nẵng27/05/2023

Roberto Firmino has personally prepared 200 gift boxes to give to friends, family, teammates, and club staff in his final appearance for Liverpool this weekend. As a poignant farewell, the Brazilian wants to convey his pure affection and cherished memories from his time with the historically rich English club. Last week at Anfield, fans were moved to see him, his face teary, waving goodbye as he took his final steps on the pitch, a place that holds so many memorable moments. His equalizer against Aston Villa turned out to be a truly emotional farewell. This weekend, will Firmino take to the field again and score again to make his farewell complete?

Every farewell leaves behind a sense of nostalgia, especially for a striker who made a worthy contribution to the recent golden era of the Merseyside club! Firmino's tearful farewell likely stems from the fact that Liverpool – for some reason – proactively parted ways with him after his contract expired. Firmino himself never thought about leaving England, and in fact, even now, he doesn't know where he'll go next. Do Brazilian players seem less concerned about long-term plans?

It may not be the case, but the recent incident involving Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jnr at Valencia's stadium in the Spanish league may have been an unexpected turn of events for the young man. He was subjected to racist abuse and insults from the home crowd, which escalated into a physical altercation, leading to a referee's sending him off. Outraged by the mistreatment he received, not only from extremist fans but also from unsympathetic club officials, Vinicius – advised by several senior players – threatened to leave Spain.

La Liga administrators, realizing their slow response, apologized by promptly overturning Vinicius's red card and promising to focus on preventing discriminatory behavior on the pitch. Spaniards also took a shock to themselves, blaming their own carelessness and complacency regarding the trauma players have endured on the field for years. The Bernabeu stadium during Real Madrid's recent match against Rayo Vallecana was filled with banners supporting Vinicius. His name was chanted from all sides – he was sitting in a corner of the stands at the time. It's time for not only Madrid but all of Spain to worry about a wave of boycotts against their national football. Vinicius himself – in a fit of anger over repeated insults – called La Liga a… discriminatory league.

It remains to be seen whether the 22-year-old Brazilian will find peace enough to change his mind about leaving the place that hurt him. Real Madrid needs Vinicius as their main striker alongside an aging Benzema. They will certainly do everything to keep him. Criticized for their lack of seriousness in combating racism on the pitch – most recently, former England international Ian Wright has openly spoken out – will La Liga's administrators do everything they can to erase the negative reputation they are facing, and prevent alienation and boycotts from their stars?

And Vinicius, if he loses interest in Spain and insists on leaving, will he then imitate his compatriot Formino and leave behind gift boxes himself?
