Many elderly people in Ba Thuoc commune, who are knowledgeable about the Thai ethnic minority's writing system, have actively taught it to the younger generation.
Chiềng Lau village is a disadvantaged village in the commune, primarily inhabited by the Thai ethnic minority. Recognizing the importance of learning the Thai script, the village has actively encouraged residents to participate in learning; creating favorable conditions for learners, and organizing flexible Thai script classes that do not interfere with the villagers' daily lives. To date, many residents of Chiềng Lau village are proficient in reading and writing their ethnic language. This achievement not only contributes to preserving the traditional cultural identity of the Thai people but also promotes the "All People United in Building a Culturally Rich Life" movement.
Mr. Ha Van Giao (of the Thai ethnic group), from Chieng Lau village, shared: "I always keep in mind my father's teaching: As long as there is a written language, there is our ethnic group. Therefore, I registered to participate in the Thai language class held right at the village's cultural center. With the dedicated guidance of artisans and those knowledgeable about the Thai ethnic group's writing system, along with my own efforts, I have learned to read and write my ethnic language. I will actively teach my family members and relatives to learn the writing system to preserve our cultural identity."
To preserve and promote the written language of the ethnic minority people, the local government has developed a plan to conserve and promote the cultural identity of ethnic minorities in general and the Thai ethnic group in particular. In coordination with relevant agencies, they have opened Thai language classes, encouraged artisans to teach, and mobilized people to participate. Recently, the People's Committee of the commune, together with the Thanh Hoa Provincial Association of Ethnology and Anthropology, opened two Thai language classes in Chieng Lau village. After three months of study, the students have learned to read and write the Thai script. This is the next generation, along with the local Party committee and government, to preserve the spoken and written language of the Thai ethnic group.
Meritorious Artisan Ha Cong Mau, who has made significant contributions to teaching the Thai language in Ba Thuoc commune, shared: "As a member of the Thai ethnic group, I always want the culture and writing system of my people to be passed down to future generations. I have collected materials on the Thai script and opened free Thai language classes for those who want to learn. At the same time, I also participate in teaching Thai language classes organized by relevant authorities. Seeing the students, especially the young ones, enthusiastically learning the Thai script makes me very happy and gives me more motivation to teach."
Ms. Nguyen Thi Trang, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Ba Thuoc commune, said: "In recent years, thanks to the attention of the State, many Thai language classes have been organized in the commune, attracting many people to participate. This is one of the favorable conditions for the locality to preserve and promote the traditional cultural values of the Thai ethnic group. In the future, the commune will continue to coordinate with functional units to organize more Thai language classes to preserve and promote the spoken and written language of the Thai ethnic group. We will also organize competitions and cultural exchanges to encourage the younger generation to use and develop the Thai language, contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic minorities in the area."
