Efforts to improve the quality of the population

Officials from the Quan Hoa District Health Center gave a thematic talk on sex at birth to teenagers and young adults in schools.

In fulfilling its assigned functions and tasks, the Quan Hoa District Health Center annually advises the district to direct localities and units to integrate population targets into socio-economic development plans; develop specific plans for implementing population and development work; and plan for implementing projects to improve population quality. At the same time, it advises the District People's Committee to issue directives to communes and towns on implementing population and development work. The District Health Center also develops plans and proposes solutions to improve population quality; and strengthens the innovation of content and methods to bring about effectiveness in the implementation of programs and projects.

In implementing the 2025 Gender Imbalance at Birth Project, the Quan Hoa District Health Center organized a thematic discussion on gender imbalance at birth for couples preparing for marriage and those who have already given birth according to the law in 7 communes and towns. The discussion focused on raising awareness about the current state of gender imbalance at birth in Vietnam; the causes of gender imbalance at birth; and the consequences of gender imbalance at birth. This contributed to raising awareness among couples preparing for marriage and those who have already given birth to children of the same sex regarding legal regulations related to sex selection at birth and the consequences of gender imbalance at birth.

Ms. Ha Thi Len from Nam Xuan commune shared: "My husband and I already have two daughters. Many people think we should have more children to have a son to help with the family work, but after receiving information from officials about family planning, legal regulations related to sex selection at birth, and the consequences of gender imbalance at birth, my husband and I decided to stop at two children to raise them better. We also exchanged knowledge about raising well-behaved and healthy children, caring for parents, grandparents, and the elderly in the family, and learned from each other's experiences in developing the family economy."

Dr. Ha Quang Hoi, Head of the Nam Xuan Commune Health Station, said: "As a particularly disadvantaged commune, lacking infrastructure and facing difficult transportation conditions, with the population mainly consisting of the Thai ethnic minority, promoting population communication and health education will be a bridge to help people in the area know how to protect their own health and that of their families. Therefore, during community outreach sessions, health workers not only disseminate information about healthcare but also answer questions about disease prevention for themselves and their families; pregnant mothers receive regular prenatal check-ups, nutritional advice, and guidance on monitoring their health to minimize risks and avoid unfortunate complications."

Along with changes in people's thinking, the maintenance and expansion of the scope of benefits from projects such as: elderly healthcare; controlling the rate of increase in the sex ratio at birth; and programs to expand screening, diagnosis, and treatment of certain prenatal and neonatal diseases... have contributed to many positive changes in population work in the mountainous district of Quan Hoa. In 2024, the rate of women (aged 15-49) with husbands using modern contraceptive methods reached 76%; the rate of pregnant women under management reached over 99.6%; the rate of pregnant women receiving complete prenatal examinations reached over 81%; 100% of people had access to health services in the managed area, and 100% of work records were processed entirely online.

Mr. Dinh Van Bot, Director of the Quan Hoa District Health Center, said: "The most important solution currently in implementing population policies in ethnic minority and mountainous areas is propaganda and mobilization. The District Health Center will direct commune health stations to strengthen propaganda activities through various forms via social media, small group consultations, direct consultations through campaigns, thematic talks, etc., with concise and easy-to-understand content to strongly change people's awareness and behavior in implementing population and development policies in the mountainous district. At the same time, we will effectively implement models and projects to improve the quality of the population, contributing to the achievement of the district's socio-economic development targets."
