Innovate methods of propaganda.
“At what age can a man legally marry?” As soon as the speaker posed the question, dozens of students from Tinh Bien Ethnic Boarding Secondary School in Thoi Son Ward simultaneously raised their hands. The entire hall became lively with a series of answers, interspersed with applause when their classmates answered correctly. This warm atmosphere marked the beginning of a presentation on reducing child marriage and consanguineous marriage, organized by the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religion, with the participation of approximately 50 students.

Child marriage and consanguineous marriage not only affect health and population quality but also impact the education and career opportunities of young people. In recent years, along with the implementation of sub-project 2 of Project 9 of the national target program for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, the province has strengthened propaganda in ethnic boarding schools, helping students access legal knowledge.
Gone were the dry presentations; the awareness campaign was conducted in the form of interaction, Q&A, and problem-solving. Danh Minh Kha, an 8th-grade student from Tinh Bien Ethnic Boarding Secondary School, said that participating in an interactive campaign for the first time helped him better understand the importance of studying before thinking about marriage. “Before, I only knew that men had to be 20 years old and women 18 to get married. Through this campaign, I understand that marrying too early will affect my studies, health, and future. I will try my best to study well and share what I learned today with my friends,” Kha said.
For the students, this was an opportunity to learn about the law and understand the consequences of child marriage and consanguineous marriage. Neáng Thị Kim Ngân, a 9th-grade student at Tịnh Biên Ethnic Boarding Secondary School, shared: “The awareness campaign helped me better understand the consequences of child marriage and consanguineous marriage. I think at my age, the most important thing is studying.”
Spreading awareness from the school
The majority of students at Tinh Bien Ethnic Boarding Secondary School are children of ethnic minorities. Therefore, in addition to teaching academics, the school focuses on life skills education , adolescent reproductive health, and legal knowledge through various appropriate activities. This helps students develop correct awareness, appreciate learning, set goals for the future, and avoid the negative consequences of early marriage. Ms. Le Ho Thao Trang, Principal of Tinh Bien Ethnic Boarding Secondary School, said: “When students directly interact and participate in handling situations, they learn faster and understand more deeply. The school continues to integrate the dissemination of information on gender equality, the Law on Marriage and Family, and adolescent reproductive health care into educational activities to contribute to the formation of a positive lifestyle for students.”
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religion Danh Tha, students are one of the groups that need to be educated early on to form a correct understanding of marriage and family. Through training courses, propaganda conferences, distribution of documents and leaflets, and communication activities in schools, the department aims to help students understand the legal regulations and clearly understand the consequences of child marriage and consanguineous marriage for themselves, their families, and the community.
With increased awareness, students learn to protect themselves, continue their studies and training, and become active advocates, contributing to spreading the message to their families and communities. "To sustainably reduce child marriage and consanguineous marriage in ethnic minority areas, we must start by raising awareness among ethnic minority youth," said Mr. Danh Tha.
