Finnish telecommunications group Nokia announced on March 31 that it had reached an agreement with Amazon, closing a lawsuit over patent infringement related to video technology.
In an official statement, Nokia stated that it “has entered into a patent agreement with Amazon, which includes the use of Nokia video technology in Amazon's streaming services and devices.”
The agreement means that all previous lawsuits Nokia had filed against Amazon will be dropped. However, the detailed terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Nokia filed a lawsuit against Amazon in October 2023 in five global jurisdictions, including the UK, the European Union General Patent Court (UPC), Germany, India and the US.
According to Nokia, Amazon's services and devices - especially Prime Video - infringe on a series of its patents on video compression, content distribution, content recommendation systems, and hardware-related technologies.
Amazon isn’t the only company facing Nokia’s complaints. HP was also sued in the US in October 2023 for allegedly using Nokia’s video technology without a license. That case was settled in October 2024./.
