In previous years, vegetable cultivation in La Gi town was mainly concentrated in Tan Binh commune and Binh Tan ward. However, recognizing the relatively stable income from vegetable farming, in recent years, many farmers in Tan Phuoc, Tan Tien, Tan Hai communes and Tan An ward have also utilized their vacant land to grow vegetables. As a result, the area of vegetable cultivation in La Gi town has expanded, meeting the increasing demand for fresh vegetables, especially during the Tet holiday.

Typically, starting in early October of the lunar calendar each year, farmers in La Gi begin planting long-term vegetable crops, and in late November, they plant short-term crops (vegetables with a growth period of 30-45 days). According to many farmers, planting during the winter-spring season offers many advantages such as good weather, minimal damage, and easy crop growth. Most vegetables have short growth periods, allowing for quick harvests, and demand increases significantly towards the end of the year. Furthermore, this year, vegetable prices have remained stable and increased by 20-30% compared to the same time last year, making growers very enthusiastic. Therefore, La Gi farmers have meticulously prepared from land preparation to crop care to achieve the highest possible yields.

Owning a plot of land larger than 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares), every year, as Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang's family in Binh An 3 village, Tan Binh commune, grows a variety of vegetables such as radishes, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and leafy greens like lettuce, chrysanthemum greens, bok choy, mustard greens, Chinese cabbage, water spinach, and jute mallow to meet the market demand for Tet. With nearly 30 years of experience in vegetable farming, along with diligence and care in all aspects of cultivation, watering, and fertilizing, Ms. Trang's family's vegetable garden is always lush and green.

Ms. Trang shared: "Normally, our family mainly grows a few types of vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, water spinach, lettuce... to supply traditional markets in the town. However, due to the strong increase in demand for green vegetables during Tet (Lunar New Year), my family is increasing the variety of vegetables we grow to increase our family income, support our children's education, and have a warmer and more prosperous Tet."

Meanwhile, the family of Mr. Ho Van Quoc Viet in Thanh Linh village, Tan Phuoc commune, is actively growing various fruit and vegetable crops such as gourds, pumpkins, winter squash, loofah, bitter melon, cucumbers, and watermelons… to serve during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Mr. Viet was delighted because his family's vegetable and fruit garden yielded a high harvest, promising a bountiful crop for the Lunar New Year of 2024.

According to Mr. Viet, the techniques for planting and caring for these vegetables are quite simple, but growers need to pay attention to the watering and fertilizing process because gourds, pumpkins, etc., are very water-loving plants, so growers must water them regularly and provide moisture for them to grow and develop well. Visiting the vegetable gardens for Tet (Lunar New Year) at this time in La Gi town, people seem to be focusing their efforts on hoping for a bountiful harvest to provide extra income for their families to celebrate the spring festival.
