Farmers reap high profits during the winter-spring crop season.

Việt NamViệt Nam16/04/2024

Compared to previous years, the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop faced certain difficulties, especially severe drought and localized water shortages in irrigation areas. However, thanks to the timely inspection, guidance, and support from the People's Committee of Tanh Linh district, the yield was high, averaging 74 quintals/hectare, with a total production of approximately 67,000 tons, exceeding 110% of the planned target. With current prices ranging from 7,000 to 7,500 VND/kg, farmers earned between 25 and 30 million VND/hectare.

During an inspection of the 2023-2024 winter-spring rice crop currently being harvested, Mr. Mai Tri Man, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Tanh Linh district, stated: The 2023-2024 winter-spring crop in the entire district covered a total planted area of 11,552/11,349 hectares, reaching nearly 102% of the planned target and 94.2% compared to the same period last year. Of this, 9,019 hectares were planted with rice, primarily using varieties such as OM4900, OM5451, OM6976, OM7347, OM2395, ML202, and OM4900. Due to hot weather in the early months of 2024 and low discharge rates (27-32 m3/s) from the Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Plant downstream, some localities such as Dong Kho, Gia An, and Duc Binh experienced localized water shortages in certain areas. Thanks to proactive drought prevention efforts, particularly through discussions with the Da Nhim - Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Company to propose operating the Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Plant complex from February 29th to March 31st, increasing the average daily flow rate to a minimum of 40 m3/s and operating for a minimum of 14 hours/day, the rational regulation of pumping and irrigation schedules by Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited - La Nga Branch, and the proactive efforts of water user groups in communes and towns, irrigation water supply for the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop has been largely stabilized.

During this year's winter-spring crop season, 312 hectares of rice seeds were socialized, including 4 hectares producing super-elite seeds by Loc Troi Group Joint Stock Company in Dong Kho commune, and the remaining 304 hectares producing elite seeds in Duc Phu, Nghi Duc, Mang To, Bac Ruong, Huy Khiem, Dong Kho, Duc Binh, Duc Thuan, Gia An communes and Lac Thanh town. Farmers are increasingly interested in using certified rice seeds in rice production, thereby increasing the percentage of certified rice seeds to over 95%. To encourage farmers to produce high-quality rice, the district provided support for rice land according to Government Decrees No. 35 and No. 62 with a total budget of over 3.7 billion VND...

In addition to linkages under Government Decree 98, localities have also implemented linkages with companies, enterprises, and cooperatives to produce 3,000 hectares of high-quality rice out of 3,400 hectares of planned large-scale rice fields in the 2021-2025 period. Using agricultural extension support funds, the district has built 79 hectares of rice production models according to VietGAP standards with the brand name "Tanh Linh Rice". The District Agricultural Technical and Service Center has implemented an organic rice production model, applying the SRI process in cultivation in Duc Phu and Gia An communes on an area of 10 hectares under the agricultural promotion program, achieving a yield of 75 quintals/hectare, 5 quintals/hectare higher than conventional production, and a profit of 4-5 million VND/hectare higher.

To conserve water resources during the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season, localities such as Duc Phu, Nghi Duc, Bac Ruong, Dong Kho, Lac Thanh, Gia An, etc., have proactively converted 1,833 hectares of rice-growing land to other crops; of which, 902 hectares were converted to corn, 552 hectares to various types of beans, and 379 hectares to peanuts. This crop restructuring by these localities has effectively promoted flexibility in land use, increased water conservation, and reduced pest and disease damage to rice crops in subsequent seasons.

The 2023-2024 winter-spring crop in Tanh Linh district was successful, bringing high profits to farmers. However, in reality, many difficulties and challenges remain, including hot weather, localized water shortages, frequent pest and disease outbreaks, dense sowing, and the prevalence of weeds, wild rice, and two-tiered rice varieties. These issues require proactive solutions from the local government in the coming time to help farmers feel secure in their production and create clean, sustainable agricultural products.
