Kumquat is one of the main fruit crops of Thanh Ha commune.

High selling price

Thanh Ha commune is a key area for fruit tree development in Hai Phong city. In particular, kumquat trees are cultivated in concentrated areas covering over 150 hectares. Having taken root in the fertile alluvial soil of Thanh Ha for over 30 years, kumquat trees have gradually become the main fruit crop of the commune, along with lychee, banana, and lemon…

Drawing on practical experience and applying scientific and technical methods to production, the kumquat growing areas in Trang Liet 1, Trang Liet 2 villages, etc., of Thanh Ha commune consistently yield high productivity and quality. Especially this year, the high price of kumquats has brought high profits to farmers, making everyone happy and excited.

Mr. Tran Van Giai's family in Trang Liet 2 village is one of the households with the largest kumquat cultivation area in Thanh Ha commune, with over 1.5 acres. Having been involved in kumquat farming for many years, Mr. Giai said that it's rare for the price of kumquats to be as high as this year. "My family is selling kumquats at prices ranging from 30,000 to 33,000 VND/kg, three times higher than last year. At this price, we're making a profit of 25-30 million VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters)," Mr. Giai said.

Having just harvested the first crop of kumquats from his two plots of land, Mr. Tran Huu Lin, also from Trang Liet 2 village, said that this year's kumquats are of good quality, with beautiful, plump, thin-skinned, and juicy fruits, making them popular with traders. After the Lunar New Year, farmers will harvest kumquats, but mainly in late March and early April.

Typhoon Yagi, which struck in September 2024, caused some kumquat trees to be uprooted and die, forcing farmers to replant. This year also marks the first time the newly planted kumquat crop has yielded a good harvest, making the farmers even more enthusiastic.

Sustainable development orientation

Farmers in Thanh Ha are harvesting and selling kumquats at prices ranging from 30,000 to 33,000 VND per kilogram.

The Thanh Son Agricultural Service Cooperative is responsible for managing over 120 hectares of kumquat orchards in Thanh Ha commune. Over the years, the cooperative has focused on training households to ensure safe production and adherence to technical procedures. As a result, the kumquat trees are growing and developing well. Some trees planted in 1995-1996 are still thriving and bearing fruit consistently.

According to Mr. Tran Trung Lin, Director of Thanh Son Agricultural Service Cooperative, the conversion to kumquat cultivation by local people has yielded clear results. The techniques for growing kumquats are not overly complicated; understanding each step helps to minimize pest and disease problems, resulting in uniform fruit production. Kumquat yields have remained consistently high year after year, ranging from 1.3 to 1.7 tons per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), and even exceeding 1.8 tons per sao. If kumquats fetch good prices, the economic benefits are 2-3 times higher than other crops.

Thanks to mastering cultivation techniques, Thanh Ha kumquats yield high productivity and quality.

Despite high kumquat prices and profits, kumquat growers in Thanh Ha commune still worry about a bumper harvest but falling prices. Mr. Vu Van Sich from Trang Liet 2 village lamented: “This year, the kumquat harvest is good and prices are high, but in many years we have faced price drops. Therefore, farmers hope for a stable market for their kumquats, less dependence on middlemen, so they can produce with peace of mind. We hope that relevant authorities will focus on building a brand for Thanh Ha kumquats. We request that management agencies strengthen inspection and supervision of fertilizers and pesticides to help farmers produce safely and save costs.”

According to Ms. Vu Thi Hao, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh Ha commune, kumquat trees are currently one of the main crops of the locality. The commune encourages people to expand the area under cultivation in suitable locations. They are strengthening linkages in production and consumption, gradually building a stable commodity production area. This contributes to the sustainable development of the local agricultural economy.
