Farmers harvest summer-autumn rice crop.

Dong Thap Province - In the upstream communes of Dong Thap, farmers are currently focusing on harvesting the summer-autumn rice crop to prepare for the floodwaters that will inundate the fields. According to local farmers, the area formerly known as Thuong Phuoc 1 commune, now part of the new Thuong Phuoc commune, mainly grows rice and glutinous rice, with yields of about 6.5 tons/ha for glutinous rice and 6.25 tons/ha for regular rice. Glutinous rice is priced at 7,000 VND/kg, while regular rice is priced from 6,200 to 6,500 VND/kg. At these prices, farmers make a profit, but not a large one. It is expected that the harvest of over 1,000 hectares in the former Thuong Phuoc 1 commune will be completed by July 21st. After that, the local authorities will open the sluice gates to welcome the floodwaters, which are rich in silt.

Thuong Phuoc commune was formed by merging Thuong Phuoc 1, Thuong Phuoc 2, and Thuong Thoi Tien communes. Within this merger, Thuong Phuoc 2 and Thuong Thoi Tien areas have a closed dike system covering 2,600 hectares, and flood release will depend on the actual needs of the people in the production area.
