VnExpressVnExpress14/10/2023

Nguyen Anh Thy (Anna, born in 2005) is the only Vietnamese person to participate in The Amazing Race Finland and contributed to bringing this game show to be filmed in her hometown of Ho Chi Minh City.

Anna Anh Thy, along with Finnish billionaire Peter Vesterbacka – Chairman of the Finest Future educational organization – joined the program and formed the Red Team. On October 22nd, the Red Team will participate in the premiere of Amazing Race Finland in Ho Chi Minh City. This is the first broadcast of the Finnish adventure game show Amazing Race.

The premiere event is open to everyone and will take place at the New World Hotel (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City). This is also the location where the Amazing Race film crew stayed during filming in July.

This game follows teams of two as they race around the world to complete challenging physical and mental tasks. The prize for the winner is a total of 30,000 euros.

Thy Anh is a former student of Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City). Not only was she active in Vietnam, but while studying in Finland, she independently sought out and embraced many ways to develop herself and accumulated experiences that few international students have, including the opportunity to participate in the Amazing Race.

I started studying in Finland in 2021, right after finishing 10th grade in Vietnam. I registered for Finest Future's global student connection program to study high school for free in Finland and completed the B1 level Finnish language exam.

Before going to another country to study, Anh Thy had a remarkable academic and extracurricular record, including first prize in the city-level excellent student competition in Literature in 9th grade; first and second prizes in the school-level Science and Technology competition for two consecutive years; third prize for outstanding student leader at the district level; and a gold medal in basketball at the city level in 2017-2018...

Upon arriving in Finland, Anh Thy continued to excel as a student at Mäntän Lukio High School; she led the delegation representing member countries of the European Youth Parliament (EYP); she was the head of the organizing committee for the EYP Finland regional conference in Tampere; and she was the volunteer leader for the global startup event SLUSH 2022... The 2005-born international student also won first prize in the Moves Like Summeri dance competition on Finnish television channel YLE in 2022.

The female student shared that her family had guided her and equipped her with soft skills from a young age to prepare her for studying abroad. However, upon arriving in a new country, Anh Thy still experienced significant culture shock. The young woman is extroverted and open-minded, which is contrary to the majority in the place where she is staying. Therefore, she faced skepticism and found it difficult to integrate.

"I called Bambi Dang - CEO of Finest Future - and asked for advice because she has a similar personality and experiences to mine. From that, I had a better perspective and a better solution," Anh Thy recounted.

Anh Thy shared that, initially, she made the mistake of blaming the lack of a lively environment, unfriendly people, and incompatible culture. She later realized that the core issue was that she needed to change her own approach to interacting with and welcoming people, as she was a newcomer to this environment.

From then on, Anh Thy changed her way of thinking, becoming more proactive in accepting and respecting cultural differences. She still maintains her values as a Vietnamese woman, not conforming to Finnish standards, but still creating a balance to better develop herself.

"We can proactively change our mindset with the motto 'why am I here, what do I want here,' and then pursue that. Because I want to develop here, experience the culture, instead of looking for an easy-to-communicate Vietnamese person, I make friends with locals, get to know them, and grow to love them," Anh Thy further shared.

In addition, the female student born in 2005 regularly participates in multidisciplinary events with Peter Vesterbacka and Bambi Dang to expand her network and develop her entrepreneurial goals.

Prior to her experience on The Amazing Race 2023, in 2022, Anh Thy was introduced to SLUSH, a major global startup event founded by Peter. She attended, met people, and built many useful relationships for her future career, accumulating knowledge, entrepreneurial experience, creative inspiration, and generating many ideas for her own project.

"Anyone can look for suitable opportunities, it doesn't necessarily have to be entrepreneurship. If you like playing sports, you can join clubs. That way, we also gain more experiences and make new friends," Anh Thy affirmed.

These are also things that Vietnamese female students learn thanks to the Finnish education system. Schools here emphasize fairness and autonomy. Students in different cities receive a comparable quality of education, are allowed to choose additional subjects, are not given excessive homework, and are not required to take entire courses in subjects they dislike.

However, to achieve the best academic results, students need to be more conscientious about completing their assignments. According to Anh Thy, this is how education in Finland instills a sense of responsibility in young people for their own lives.

At the upcoming premiere of The Amazing Race in Ho Chi Minh City, Anna Anh Thy will share more about her study abroad journey, opportunities, and the value of Finnish education, in addition to her experiences on The Amazing Race. The program will also feature her teammates Peter Vesterbacka and Bambi Dang, who have been her companions throughout her studies and personal development in Finland.

Bambi Dang was born into a poor family in Nghe An province. She nearly dropped out of school due to her family's circumstances. After much effort and determination to pursue her passion, she found a way to study in Finland and successfully built a career, helping many young people around the world, including Vietnam, access quality education in Finland.

Peter Vesterbacka is a Finnish billionaire and co-founder of the popular game Angry Birds. He is also a well-known startup expert in his country.
