America under Trump 2.0

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/11/2024

Former President Donald Trump has been re-elected to return to the White House once again. What will US policy be like in the coming period?

For now, observers are focusing on Trump's upcoming cabinet appointments. Many American political experts in Washington D.C. predict that after the recent downfall of his subordinates following the 2020 election, Trump will prioritize loyalty in selecting his next White House staff. A former senior U.S. official and Republican predicts that the new cabinet's personnel plan will be finalized before Christmas this year.

The future of US foreign policy

Of course, Mr. Trump has outlined some basic directions for foreign policy, but the details of action and implementation plans will remain a question mark, and the upcoming White House leadership will be a crucial factor in determining the answer. Several experts in Washington DC shared the following assessment with Thanh Nien newspaper .

For the Indo-Pacific region, China remains a major competitor to the US, and it is highly likely that Trump will continue to increase economic pressure on Beijing. Increased tariffs on Chinese goods are almost certain, and may even be accompanied by measures targeting certain countries in the region that have large trade surpluses with the US. A trade balance agreement with China would be Trump's goal to meet domestic demands.

In addition, Trump may also be pressuring China to cooperate in "de-escalating" tensions with North Korea.

Meanwhile, the alliances between the US and Japan and South Korea could face certain challenges because under Trump, Washington might demand that Tokyo and Seoul share more of the burden. Similarly, US patronage of Taiwan could lead to more "quid pro quo" from Taipei.

Also in the Indo-Pacific, Trump may continue his predecessor's policy of promoting smaller-scale multilateral cooperation such as the "Quad" or the AUKUS agreement (comprising the US, Australia, and the UK) because this approach aligns with Trump's views and the characteristics of the region – which finds it difficult to form large multilateral networks like NATO.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, it is predicted that Trump will pressure President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept certain conditions that Kyiv has long refused to compromise on, and to negotiate with Russia to reach a peaceful solution. Meanwhile, resolving conflicts in the Middle East could be a major challenge for Trump after taking office.

Questions remain about Project 2025?

In addition, the UK-based investigative journalism organization CCR (The Centre for Climate Reporting) released footage last August containing a conversation with Russell Vought, a co-author of Project 2025. He also previously led the Office of Management and Budget (a White House agency) under President Donald Trump.

Accordingly, the Project 2025 team has planned policies should Trump return to the White House, with an emphasis on expanding presidential power while tightening immigration. The Project 2025 team has even drafted hundreds of executive orders, regulations, and memoranda to lay the groundwork for swift action on Trump's plans.

However, Project 2025 has been heavily criticized for granting excessive power to the White House occupant. For this reason, Trump has publicly denied any involvement with Project 2025.

However, this plan is sponsored and implemented by the Heritage Foundation – an influential research and policy advisory organization in the US with close ties to Mr. Trump. During the early stages of Mr. Trump's first term, the Heritage Foundation played a significant role in shaping and implementing the White House's Indo-Pacific strategy, aiming to form the "Quad" (US - Japan - Australia - India).

Therefore, observers are still questioning whether Trump will pursue Project 2025 after taking over the White House in early 2025. The answer to this question will have a significant impact on the future of the United States.
