According to Nguyen Van Nhien, Director of the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board of An Giang province, on February 27, the World Heritage Center confirmed that Vietnam's nomination dossier fully met the technical requirements and transferred it to ICOMOS for evaluation. ICOMOS has just announced that Professor Rima Hooja, an ICOMOS expert from India, will be coming to An Giang to conduct a field assessment from August 17 to 27.
To create a strong synergy with the field assessment work, the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board has drafted a plan to organize the Oc Eo - Ba The Cultural Heritage Week in 2026. The week will take place from August 17th to 25th at the main location of the Oc Eo - Ba The National Special Relic Site. The centerpiece of the series of activities is the "Heritage Education " program, and many other activities will be implemented during the heritage week. Nguyen Van Nhien, Director of the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board of the province, shared: "These activities are an opportunity for all of us to contemplate a brilliant civilization, aiming at heritage education, contributing to the preservation and promotion of Oc Eo cultural values in the journey towards being inscribed as a World Heritage site."
Earlier, during a field survey at the Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological site and a meeting with the Steering Committee for the World Heritage nomination dossier, Central Committee member, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung directed: “Departments, agencies, and localities must focus intensely, coordinate closely, and implement tasks according to the ‘green channel’ mechanism. Tasks that need to be done today should not be postponed until tomorrow. The head of each agency must be responsible for the progress and results of implementation. Regarding the 16 key tasks in preparation for welcoming the ICOMOS expert delegation, implementation must be carried out with the utmost urgency, absolutely without delay beyond the planned timeframe.”
The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee directed the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board and local authorities to urgently renovate and clean up the entire relic site to ensure a clean and airy environment; proactively plant vibrant, easy-to-care-for flowers along the roads leading to the relic site. At the same time, it is necessary to increase the installation of commitment signs to protect the relic site; and encourage surrounding households to display small commitment signs in both Vietnamese and English at home with the content: "The family and the Oc Eo - Ba The community join hands to protect the heritage," including the local police phone number for timely handling of security and order issues.
At the conference coordinating activities to welcome experts from the International Council on Monuments and Sites, the Director of the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board and representatives of local authorities and relevant departments discussed and assigned specific roles to connect resources. Accordingly, the Management Board proposed that the local education sector cooperate in promoting the "Heritage School" movement, encouraging universities and colleges to turn Oc Eo - Ba The into an "open classroom" through research projects and the digitization of documents. Organizations such as youth, women's, farmers', and veterans' groups were also called upon to spearhead the volunteer campaign "Green, Clean, and Beautiful Oc Eo Heritage" to preserve the surrounding environment of the relic site.
According to Le Van Da, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Oc Eo Commune: "The relevant departments and agencies, along with the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board, need to conduct preliminary surveys of three potential locations to arrange a space for welcoming ICOMOS experts to conduct on-site assessments of the nomination dossier. Early preparation and the arrangement of a spacious and visually appealing space will help the expert team have an impressive perspective and make a good assessment of the relic's activities."
The Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board and related units are urgently implementing 16 important tasks, focusing on restoring relic sites, completing the explanatory board system, beautifying the landscape, reorganizing the artifact storage, organizing a new exhibition at the Oc Eo Cultural Exhibition House, and upgrading facilities for receiving and working with ICOMOS experts.
