Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nam (Thanh Vong hamlet, Tan Trung commune) started his mink farming business more than four years ago. Starting with four breeding minks, he has expanded his herd, selling 70 breeding pairs of minks annually at 9 million VND each, and over 20 commercial minks at 1.3 million VND per kilogram. Currently, his family has 25 cages, housing more than 15 females, which produce over 100 offspring each year. On average, Mr. Nam's family earns over 200 million VND per year from his mink farming business.
Mr. Nam said: "Before, my family's life was difficult, but thanks to a friend's introduction, I saw that raising mink could generate high income, they are easy to raise, and the food source is readily available locally, so I decided to implement the model. I've been raising them for 4 years now and I find it very effective."
Meanwhile, Ms. Le Thi Dep (Lung Truong hamlet, Quach Pham commune) has been developing her economy through vegetable farming for over 10 years. On her 3,000 m2 garden, Ms. Dep has divided the land into several sections for growing coconuts, pineapples, and other fruit trees; alongside that, she grows multiple crops of vegetables throughout the year depending on suitable weather conditions. This provides a source of food for daily meals and generates an additional income of over 20 million VND per year. Ms. Dep's family only uses organic fertilizers and manually controls pests and weeds to produce clean products for the market. Ms. Dep said: “My family continuously grows vegetables, divides the land into sections for fruit trees, and regularly takes care of them. On average, we earn several million VND per month from selling vegetables and fruit, which is very stable.”
Ms. Le Thi Dep earns a stable income of several million dong per month from growing vegetables and fruit trees.
In 2016, with a loan of 10 million VND from the District Farmers' Fund, Mr. Bao Thanh Hai (Tan An Ninh B hamlet, Ta An Khuong Nam commune) started building a pig pen to raise 12 pigs. Raising pigs was profitable, so he invested in raising crabs. With a 1,600 m2 crab pond, from April to November, he harvests 250-300 kg each month, earning a profit of 40-50 million VND after deducting expenses. The crabs are sold in Ca Mau City, ensuring a more stable price compared to selling locally. From December to January, he spends time renovating the pond. The income from crab farming allowed Mr. Hai's family to build a house worth over 300 million VND in 2018.
Mr. Bao Thanh Hai's family increased their income from raising crabs.
"Currently, my children are also implementing the crab farming model. Besides maintaining the model, I also support many other farmers with crab farming techniques," Mr. Hai said.
Thanks to the implementation of Directive No. 03 of the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee on strengthening guidance and promoting initiatives of cadres and people, organizing models, and improving production efficiency; along with the diligence, hard work, innovative spirit, and bold application of science in labor and production of the people, Dam Doi district has hundreds of households engaged in production and livestock farming that bring in high incomes and stable economic lives, with many households rising from poverty to relatively wealthy.
