OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup backed by Microsoft (USA), announced on December 20th that it is testing new AI reasoning models called "o3" and "o3 mini".
This move marks a significant step forward for OpenAI in its competition with rivals like Google to develop intelligent AI models capable of solving more complex problems, according to Reuters.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman anticipates launching the "o3 mini" version by the end of January 2025, followed by the full "o3" version. The company hopes these new AI models will outperform existing products, attracting more investment and new customers. The o3 models are currently undergoing internal security testing. OpenAI is also inviting external researchers to participate in testing before the official release.
With the planned launch of its o3 model, OpenAI continues to solidify its position as one of the pioneering companies in the AI field, while posing a significant challenge to its competitors. OpenAI initiated the AI race after launching ChatGPT in November 2022. The popularity of ChatGPT and related AI products helped the company raise $6.6 billion in a funding round in October 2024.
To compete, in early December, Google, a rival of Alphabet (USA), also launched the second generation of its Gemini AI model to regain its leading position in the AI technology development race. OpenAI and Google are constantly improving their AI models to meet the increasingly high expectations from users and investors.
