The image brought Osimhen to tears. |
Before kick-off at Rams Park, Galatasaray fans displayed a giant tifo featuring a portrait of Osimhen alongside his late mother, with the message: "We are family and family is everything." That image brought tears to the Nigerian striker's eyes as he walked onto the pitch for the pre-match formalities.
Osimhen stood beside his teammates with red eyes. Midfielder Lucas Torreira had to go over to comfort him before he shook hands with the Liverpool players. That emotional moment made the atmosphere at Rams Park even more special.
Galatasaray then won 1-0 against Liverpool thanks to a single goal from Mario Lemina, giving them a crucial advantage going into the second leg at Anfield.
The story behind Osimhen's tears is a harsh journey of overcoming poverty. The 27-year-old striker once recounted the shock of losing his mother at a very young age: "My brother called from home to say that Mom was asleep and would never wake up again. That was an extremely difficult period for my family."
Growing up in the Olusosun slum next to a massive garbage dump in Lagos, Nigeria, Osimhen and his six siblings lived crammed into a small room. Due to their poverty, Osimhen had to scavenge for soccer shoes in the garbage dump, sell water at street corners, and do many dangerous jobs to help support his family.
He recounted the heartbreaking memory of the landlord cutting off the electricity because he couldn't afford the rent: "We sat in the pitch-dark room, seven of us crammed in one place. I went outside, sat by the ditch, and burst into tears, wondering why a child had to live such a life."
From sleeping in churches, the poor Lagos boy rose to become a football star. And at Rams Park, the gratitude of the Galatasaray fans touched the deepest memories in Osimhen's heart.
