According to AFP, in a statement on June 29, Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that "three targets in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar were destroyed in precision strikes," and 25 militants were killed. These are three provinces in eastern Afghanistan.
He stated that the Pakistani offensive also included ground operations in the border region and targeted Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, an armed group often believed to be linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The minister explained that Pakistan's overnight military operations were in response to an attack that killed three paramilitary soldiers in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on June 27, as well as recent violence in border provinces.
In recent months, Pakistan has conducted numerous airstrikes in Afghanistan.
Islamabad accuses the Taliban regime of condoning armed groups behind attacks in Pakistan, particularly the TTP, which has waged a years-long campaign of violence against the South Asian nation.
Pakistan has seen an increase in attacks on police and security forces in recent years. The government accuses the TTP (also known as the Pakistani Taliban) and allied militant groups of being responsible for much of the violence.
Meanwhile, Kabul has repeatedly denied claims that Afghan territory is being used to shelter armed groups. They say that previous Pakistani airstrikes have killed civilians.
The border between these two neighboring countries has remained largely closed since violence erupted last October, bringing bilateral trade to a standstill.
