In the warm spring weather, Ms. Y Don in Tan Rat village, Ngoc Linh commune, is busy tending to her ginseng beds under the canopy of the old forest. Having been involved with ginseng and other medicinal plants for many years, she sees them not only as a source of income but also as a sustainable livelihood, helping her family maintain a stable life amidst the vast wilderness.
Not only is she a long-time ginseng grower, Ms. Y Don also established a medicinal herb cooperative with over 50 participating households. Based on her practical experience, she encouraged the villagers to collaborate in production according to standardized processes, technical guidelines, quality control, and the development of the Ngoc Linh ginseng brand. The cooperative became a central hub for production, creating a strong connection between the people and the consumer market.
Joining cooperatives helps people improve their cultivation techniques, ensure product quality, and gradually establish the brand of local medicinal herbs. Many households have shifted from small-scale production to value chain linkages, contributing to increasing the economic value under the forest canopy.
As spring arrives on Ngoc Linh peak, many villages in the commune are changing day by day. People are proactively participating in groups and cooperatives to cultivate medicinal herbs, feeling secure about the market for their products. The production chain linkage model is creating a foundation for sustainable forest economic development associated with the protection of natural resources.
By September 2025, the entire province will have nearly 1,200 households, 30 household groups and cooperatives, and 5 businesses participating in the cultivation of Ngoc Linh ginseng, with a total area of approximately 3,000 hectares. In addition, over 3,100 hectares of Codonopsis pilosula are being cultivated in the communes of Xop, Mang Den, Mang Ri, Tu Mo Rong, Ngoc Linh, etc., gradually forming a concentrated raw material area and creating a foundation for the development of the medicinal plant industry.
Local authorities have also strengthened technical support, provided guidance on brand building and consumption connections, helping people feel secure in developing medicinal plants. Linking production and consumption through cooperatives and businesses contributes to increasing product value and raising income for people in mountainous areas.
Spring is spreading across the medicinal herb growing regions of western Quang Ngai province, bringing with it hope for sustainable economic development. When people are closely connected to the forest, engage in collaborative production, and preserve the brand of medicinal herbs, these plants will continue to be an important path for highland communities to develop their economy, stabilize their lives, and protect the forest.
