Film Talent: Well-rounded, impressive

In the film "Tai ," Mai Tai Phen takes on three roles: director, screenwriter, and lead actor. The film revolves around Tai, a young man who works as a porter at a fish market but has a past involved in smuggling cigarettes. Unexpectedly caught in a dangerous spiral due to a huge debt, he is pushed to the brink, forced to make wrong choices, even those that endanger his life.

The film's script isn't groundbreaking , with a simple plot and numerous twists, yet it's quite tight, logical, and easy to understand. The central character, played by Mai Tài Phến, is meticulously developed, from his background to his psychological and personality development and motivations, resulting in consistency and relatable performances for the audience.

Rated T16 (not suitable for audiences under 16), Tài treats viewers to a feast of action and visuals, primarily set in the waterways of the Mekong Delta – An Giang province. The action sequences feature diverse settings: from the river chase at the beginning, high-speed motorcycle maneuvers, close-combat scenes, to the climactic ending at the dock… all are showcased. The fast-paced, action-packed rhythm is cleverly interwoven with comedic elements, providing laughter for the audience.

This film shows a significant improvement in Mai Tài Phến's acting skills, after a 7-year hiatus from cinema since his leading role in "My Assistant ." He not only showcased his talent in action scenes but also delivered a solid performance, portraying the character's emotions and inner journey. It's no coincidence that Mai Tài Phến admitted that there was no second choice for the role of Út Lành besides Mỹ Tâm, as the role was practically tailor-made for the female singer.

My Tam was quite comfortable in her role and was able to impress the audience with her dazzling appearances. The film's highlights also came from the villainous characters played by Hong Anh, Tran Kim Hai, Sy Toan, Ray Nguyen, and others, with their fresh performances. The role of Meritorious Artist Hanh Thuy, struggling with inner conflict between good and evil, was also an impressive highlight. Meanwhile, the comedic characters of Long Dep Trai and Vinh Rau provided a pleasant viewing experience.

However, aside from the main storyline, which is fully and completely explored, the unresolved fates of many remaining characters are regrettable, even though the production team is aware of this. The plot is predictable, and some details, especially towards the end, feel contrived, creating a sense of unnaturalness. Nevertheless, Tài remains a well-rounded and impressive film, especially for a director who is not a professional filmmaker like Mai Tài Phến. The film premiered in theaters on March 6th.
