At the close of trading on February 26, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices both declined, as shares of AI chip maker Nvidia fell to their lowest level since April 2025, despite reporting better-than-expected earnings.
The S&P 500 index fell 37.27 points, or 0.54%, to 6,908.86 points, and the Nasdaq Composite index dropped 273.69 points, or 1.18%, to 22,878.38 points. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones index rose 17.05 points, or 0.03%, to 49,499.2 points.
Nvidia announced strong earnings results, but this failed to impress investors and fueled growing concerns on Wall Street about the profitability and impact of AI. The lack of detailed information on the factors driving the outlook led some investors to question competition and the need for AI development.
Concerns about an AI bubble have weighed on stock markets in recent weeks, with the technology posing a challenge to sectors like traditional software. However, shares of software companies previously affected by fears that AI would render them obsolete rose in this session. Salesforce's stock price surged as CEO Marc Benioff attempted to allay sell-off fears after its revenue forecast fell short of expectations.
From a macroeconomic perspective, the number of initial jobless claims in the US rose slightly, signaling a somewhat sluggish economy, as investors awaited the release of January 2026 wholesale price inflation data on February 27th to assess the likelihood of the Federal Reserve (Fed) cutting interest rates.
