Winter Running Accessories

The right accessories can help you beat the winter chill on outdoor runs.

Running jackets are a somewhat unfamiliar accessory for road runners. But for those who like to run trails, this is an indispensable item. In fact, some trail races have included jackets in the group of required accessories if they want to participate in long distances of 42km or more. A good running jacket needs to be able to retain heat and protect against wind. Runners can look for lightweight jackets that keep them warm and do not restrict movement.

However, a jacket is not enough when the temperature drops. You need to add layers to keep your body warm. Long-sleeved shirts or leggings will cover your body and keep you as moist as possible. But choose fabrics that wick moisture well to prevent sweat from seeping into your skin.

Moisture-wicking socks are also a must-have accessory for winter running. According to research, wool, high-tech polyester, or nylon fabrics are most effective at keeping your feet cool and dry. Opt for socks with cushioning and arch support for added comfort.

To protect your head, you need a thermal hat. Some runners find wearing a hat too stuffy and can use a thermal headband, as long as it protects your head and ears from the cold. Choose materials that are moisture-wicking and breathable to avoid overheating your head during intense training.

In addition to a hat, you may want to consider running gloves. These are lightweight but provide good heat retention. You may also want to consider touchscreen-compatible gloves so you can use your phone without having to take them off.

For trail runners, a separate pair of shoes for winter running is also worth considering. Winter is often associated with wetness and ice. Choose shoes with soles that grip better on ice and water and waterproof toes to keep your feet dry.

In addition, in winter, daylight hours are shorter, so visibility on the road will be narrowed. Therefore, runners can consider wearing reflective equipment to help drivers easily see you while running on the road, especially in the early morning or evening.
