A rare opportunity to break through.
On a December morning in 2025, Mr. Le Minh Phong, a tourist from Da Nang City, stood on Duong Dong beach, watching the Green SM electric vehicles glide past on the roads of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone. He had visited six years ago, but the changes today surprised him: wider roads, more professional services, and a cleaner and more civilized city. “Phu Quoc has completely transformed. I believe this place is capable of hosting APEC 2027 with international standards,” Mr. Phong shared.
Positive feedback from tourists is also the expectation of the Central Government. At the working session on November 20, 2025, General Secretary To Lam emphasized that APEC 2027 is an event that opens up many new development opportunities, requiring the province and Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone to focus intensely on preparation, accelerate transportation infrastructure projects, urban beautification, environmental protection, and improve the professionalism of the conference service staff.

Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Tien Hai affirmed that the workload for the APEC High-Level Week is enormous and spans many fields. All levels, sectors, and the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone government are not allowed to delay. Comrade Nguyen Tien Hai emphasized: "This is a rare opportunity to create breakthroughs and promote faster and stronger development in Phu Quoc after APEC 2027."
In fact, a series of key projects have been activated: the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport at nearly 22,000 billion VND, the construction of the APEC Convention Center, the underground infrastructure system, urban renovation in Duong Dong and An Thoi, the first phase of the urban metro line, and many public-private partnership (PPP) investment projects for which investors have been selected. Central Committee member, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung requested that all projects be completed 3 to 6 months before APEC, considering this a particularly important political task.
From the perspective of a strategic infrastructure investment company, Mr. Bui Thanh Trung - Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, said that the company is mobilizing the highest level of resources to ensure that projects are completed on schedule, or even ahead of schedule, creating iconic national landmarks. He emphasized the spirit of "speed" in accordance with the directives of the Central Government and the province.
Phu Quoc is green and much more…
Beyond preparing for the APEC 2027 High-Level Week, Phu Quoc also aims for the long-term goal of becoming an eco-city – a leading tourism and marine economic center in the region. Chairman of the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone People's Committee, Tran Minh Khoa, assessed: “Phu Quoc has a top-tier tourism ecosystem, with beautiful beaches, a system of 5-star hotels, and many high-class resorts. The APEC 2027 event will be an important stepping stone for Phu Quoc to become an international destination.”
This advantage becomes even clearer as large corporations actively participate in the green transformation process. Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Linh, Green Management Director of SM Vietnam, emphasized the goal of making Phu Quoc a pioneering Net Zero city in Vietnam. GSM and VinFast operate nearly 500 electric taxis in Phu Quoc, significantly reducing emissions, and have proposed a roadmap for 100% of taxis and buses to use green energy by 2030. "Every green trip is an action for the environment, creating a positive image for international tourists," Ms. Linh said.

From a business perspective, the VinBus, Vinmec, and Vinpearl ecosystems are implementing many green models: electric buses connecting tourist destinations, reducing disposable items at resorts by 50%, digitizing all medical imaging at Vinmec Hospital… All of these contribute to creating a modern, civilized, green, and friendly Phu Quoc.
Director of the Department of Tourism Bui Quoc Thai affirmed that APEC 2027 is not only an opportunity to welcome tourists but also an opportunity to affirm the Phu Quoc brand. Mr. Bui Quoc Thai stated: "Each business must become a tourism ambassador, contributing to building a green Phu Quoc brand on the world map."
As evening falls on Phu Quoc Island, electric vehicles roll along the expanding roads, and construction sites remain brightly lit. APEC 2027 will come, but what is valuable are the changes already taking place: infrastructure investment, greener cities, and more professional services. When the projects are completed and life runs smoothly, the pearl island will enter APEC as an international destination, carrying with it a spring of hope and aspirations for greater heights.
