Accordingly, the singer expressed her frustration when some social media sites spread a quote allegedly attributed to her: "I know I'm not pretty, so I don't dare aim too high."
The singer, born in 2003, asserted: "I never said that; this is false and fabricated information. But the content they made up has made me think. It's a form of discrimination, a labeling of beauty and ugliness for women. Why think of yourself as ugly, and because of that, not dare to dream of a beautiful outcome for yourself?"
According to Phuong My Chi, using self-deprecating statements to label artists is not only disrespectful but also risks conveying a negative message.
"The sad thing is not just that a statement was misinterpreted, but that society continues to inadvertently foster a mindset of beauty versus ugliness as a measure of a woman's worth. When a girl is labeled with the phrase 'because I'm not pretty, I don't dare aim high,' it means that narrow-minded ideas are being unintentionally spread throughout society, infecting people with the false belief that appearance determines the limits of their dreams."
"But no one is born to conform to a single standard. A person's true value doesn't lie in their outward appearance, but in their confidence, character, and how they choose to live fully as themselves," she added.
She believes that these narrow-minded views, if associated with young people in the arts, can easily lead the public, especially young people, to develop feelings of inferiority and self-consciousness about their appearance. Instead, the singer hopes to spread positive thinking, encouraging everyone to recognize their self-worth through independence, uniqueness, and self-confidence.
From the "folk song girl" who caught attention at The Voice Kids Vietnam 2013, Phuong My Chi has now become a prominent figure. In 2025, she made her mark by reaching the top 3 of Sing! Asia 2025 and continued to impress in the final round of Em xinh say hi.
