France remains the top contender.
French and Juventus football legend Michel Platini has commented on the top contenders for the 2026 World Cup .
At an event in Turin, Italy, French football legend Michel Platini expressed his support for increasing the World Cup to 48 teams: "Expanding it is the right thing to do. I don't know if 48 teams is too few or too many, but I know something needs to be done for countries like those in Africa."

Platini is a strong supporter of this change, along with his own assessment of the contenders for the 2026 World Cup title. Platini believes in both France and Portugal: "I find the moment the national anthem plays, with the teams lining up, very emotional. In theory, my French team is the strongest, but I would put more faith in Portugal."
Platini also mentioned the impressive form of striker Jonathan David, who has scored 3 goals for host nation Canada, putting him level with superstar Messi at the top of the scoring list for the 2026 World Cup.

Mbappe is expected to bring the World Cup back to France.

However, Platini argued that the difficulties David faced in Turin weren't entirely his fault: "I would say that for a midfielder like me, adapting can be less complicated. Because in midfield, you touch the ball thousands of times. In attack, everything depends on the whole team."

Ronaldo and Portugal faced a lot of pressure after their opening match.
