Better late than never.

The current Australian Constitution, in effect since 1901, makes no mention of Indigenous communities. It wasn't until 1967 that the fundamental human rights of Indigenous peoples were legally recognized. There are currently approximately 1 million Indigenous people out of Australia's total population of around 26 million.

Even though the referendum results are uncertain because Indigenous communities only gain a voice of power if they receive majority support from voters and at least from voters in four out of six states, this is already a historic event. The core issue here is the effort to overcome discrimination against Indigenous people, to properly assess and value the historical role and influence of Indigenous people in the formation and development of this nation to this day. It also involves addressing the persistent errors, shortcomings, and inadequacies in the national legal system and the governing policies of political parties that have not only disadvantaged but also harmed Indigenous communities in Australia.

Currently, this discrimination remains severe in Australia and causes internal divisions within society. Without addressing this situation, Australia cannot achieve lasting social unity necessary for prosperity and harmony with the modern world . Addressing the dark legacy of its past now is indeed late, even very late or too late, but it is still better than nothing.
